I've noticed that on Windows, the wx.TextCtrl foreground color changes when commanded, but on Linux under GTK, KDE and Xfce it seems to have some problems (i.e. it's always black).
I'm using Xubuntu, if that helps.

I've found that the solution is to update WxPython to the newest version. Ubuntu doesn't let you do that by default.
The following link will tell you how to keep updated up to the newest version (without having to compile it from the source every time):
