Is there anything in the contract that states an rca must be available to work 6 days a week?  I am an rca who has a weekday job and can only work saturday.  I was told I have to quit.

Try reading the contract and learn for yourself.  What were you told when you were hired?

Try to hang on for now.....it won't be long and Sat delivery will be gone. They must be pressing you to be available for another day of the week.... Unless they have a bunch of back up subs...why would they ask you to quit?
Only with the usps do you have to comit to their declared days but they do not have to comit anything to you... "be available 6 days a week with no guarentee except Sat" or else....? There will be a day where subs will be so scarce- they will be glad to have you one day a week!!! Hang in there!

Its all up to the PM, I have seen folks who will only work on Sat, and its was ok with the boss, and others want you to be ready 6 days a week to run for them, get smart, tell the PO to jump, unless its the only deacent job in your area, Postal work turning into pure crap, get out if you can!

Be Glad you HAVE Saturdays to work! In my office no subs have any scheduled days anymore, we are just on call now. SO I continually search for a new job. Even a minimum wage job with 20 hours a week is a better deal here. :)

Here in flyover country most RCAs do not consider their positions a "job", but as a nice income supplement. A few hang in long enough to become career. Very few carriers around here have a scheduled day off. Most do the high option. The fewest days off and the higher salary. You also have the new regulars that are only working with 14 days annual leave.

Kate...look at it this way...

work your saturdays...if they call ya..and you aint available other times..you aint!! I have another full time job also..If i can work ..I work..if I cant...I dont...

If you really aint scared of them...and if you WOULD have to quit anyway..whats it matter? thats my view of it...i been working another job for years now...they aint fired me yet...they might get around to is someday...but until then,...oh well!!!

Be smart..I would not give up a FULLTIME job with benefits and some security...for a job with NONE and NO security!!!

they always tell the subs here...YOU ARENT GUARANTEED anything...and MY response to this is...NEITHER ARE THEY!!! ( turn-about is fair play after all)

Thanks, but the local steward harassed me and told me I had to resign because I was not available 6 days a week.  He said that was the condition you were hired under.  He is a real jerk.

all the rca's who gripe and complain that they don't want to be available to the p.o. because they have other jobs, then QUIT! there are those of us who ARE available 6 days a week and this job fits our situation....if it doesn't fit yours, then leave it open for those of us who actually want it and can give it the time it requires of us!! i don't get what all the complaints are about...we all knew what we were getting into when we were hired, if it wasn't what you wanted, you should've turned it down then!

Kathy, I wouldn't quit if I were you. Just go on as you are, if they call you and you aren't available oh well. No one can force you to resign. They might get around to letting you go (fired) if they try you and you aren't available a few times. You won't be any worse off if they do let you go. Tell the steward who is harassing you that you are calling the state stew and see if he doesn't get off your butt for a while. I hate bullies.

I agree. Do not resign. I thought that the regulars were to put in leave requests a pay period in advance. If a sub is available. If you are not available you are not available. Do not resign. work when you are available and they can pay you for those days. They guarentee us nothing. you at least guarentee them Saturdays. Until they hire an RCA who is available for 6 days a week of waiting for work they pretty much are sitting with you for the time being.

I've been a RCA for 14 years now... Use to work Mondays then transferred to another office and work Saturdays now. If I'm not mistaken, you are obligated to your assigned route not other routes. If I'm not mistaken if you can be terminated if you refuse to work your "assigned" route 3 times. Don't think they can on non assigned routes.. JMO...

YOUR STEWARD told you this? mmm...sounds like they one step away from management...

One thing to remember...stewards are not INFALLIBLE....they are not all knowing and all see-ing...and I would say..if your PM isnt screaming for your head...

Its NONE of the stewards business...You can resign if you want too of course..but I would try and see if you cant work it so you can do both if you want to.

What does your regular say? If they like you as a sub...usually they will work with you...it never hurts to ask..I told mine when I took my other job...it would be difficult for me..

But the way I do it is this...if my reg wants a vacation..I take a vacation and work for her...If she needs off sick..I take off sick if I can..and cover for her...or else let another sub have the days if they want them

It works for me...but sometimes its hard to do.

your subs are increadably lucky we have 7 rts and 5 subs and i only get 1 day a week all rts are K's. i would love to work 5 days a week and am very tempted to go to nursing school so i dont ahve to eek by any more . this 1 day a week is getting old after 10 years. even being next in line seems to be worth nothing lately, due to the fact that even if we have someone to retire it seems that RCA's are not being let to go regular. almost to the point of whats the point?
