A man named Jan Gerretszen van der Hoff died 1694/5 in New Castle Co, DE. He likely was my ancestor. Yes, I know Jan Gerretszen later became John Garretson but we cannot agree on the "van der hoff". In some records he was called "van der Hoof". It was simply an additional name to distinguish him from another Jan Gerritszen in the same community.
Can anyone transcribe either or both van ders?
One cousin thought it meant some type of occupation and was Swedish. Most of agree it likely was Dutch.
One website said it mean from "the capital".
Any thoughts will be appreciated.
