13 routes  6 subs one sub runs the aux route another just gave notice ...... see anything wrong with this picture? Regs working on their day off and chronic splitting of routes. Lots of unhappy people...... feels like we are on a sinking ship.

Have the routes without subs requested a new sub IN WRITING?

Have grievances been filed for not hiring subs if the above was done?

yes I am sure they have but to no avail. We were told there was/is/had been(?) a hiring freeze??? I'm one of the subs so I'm not as up to the ins and outs as the regulars. I did hear that one regular filed a grievance today for working on his day off. This has been happening for months. The regs are also up in arms about how they are being paid for working on their days off. As a sub I have had to work as many as 5 different routes in a week and splitting 1-2 routes on Sat as well as having my hands working mail (helping subs unfamiliar with routes) on up to four routes in one day because we are so short. I'm glad for the hours but it is not easy working so many routes and being fought over. I also hear we might finally be getting some TRCs but even if they hire them next week it will take 4-6 weeks before we have them in the office, just in time to scare them all off with holiday mail and package volume.  I'm worn out.

There is no hiring freeze with regards to rural routes.

Sounds like there are several grievable matters here.  My bet is few, if any, grievances have actually been filed.

I would LOVE to know where you are too!!  I REALLY want more hours!

And by the way...I do know how you are feeling!  Today was my first day on my new primary route.  I had been on my other route for 3 years.  Nobody else knew it, so I ended up totally setting up my old route and my new route.  Was a wonderful 12 hour day.  I am beat!!  I also know about bouncing around to help out other subs.  I am the GO TO person in my office!

"We were told there was/is/had been(?) a hiring freeze???"
As stated elsewhere, there is not now, nor ever has been, a hiring freeze for the rural craft.

"I'm one of the subs so I'm not as up to the ins and outs as the regulars."
Find a contract (on this site, to the left, links) and get "up to the ins and outs" as no-one else will do it for you.

"As a sub I have had to work as many as 5 different routes in a week and splitting 1-2 routes on Sat as well as having my hands working mail (helping subs unfamiliar with routes) on up to four routes in one day because we are so short."
I would hope you are getting paid for all this work!  When asigned to a route for a day, you get the evaluation of that route that day.  When you split another route, it should be done AFTER you complete the asigned route, DON'T be taking some of it along when you leave for the asigned route! Come back after the asigned route is completed and then go back out (costs them more and therefore gives them incentive to hire more help).  Make sure you get paid actual time on a split route as well as EMA for EVERY mile you drive on that route, Miles from the PO back to the PO.  If you split 2 routes in one day, the same thing applies!  Take ONE route at a time!!  This is also the only way the true and actual time to service a split route can be recorded.
When "helping subs unfamiliar with a route", I certainly hope you are doing this when on a "green card" and not just donating your time!  Again, make them pay, to provide incentive to hire more help.

Thanks Blue, I do everything you said except go out with mail twice which is where I lose mileage and time. My routes overlap and it is 15-20 minutes out from the office so it would take an hour to and from the routes plus 4 1/2-5 hours of delivery time. In the interest of time and making dispatch I just take it all at one time and make it back in time for the last truck on Sat. It has put a huge strain on me. Mgmt said there was a hiring freeze... interesting. Even made it sound like they had bent the rules just for us because they knew how we were struggling... lol.

I'm learning so much on this site and really appreciate you guys!!

One of the  EAS bonus goals  in recent years is the turnover rate in rural reliefs. Hence : contract ignored, no subs hired,  subs being utilized in many different offices, bullshit and outright lies over this issue approaching astronomical levels, leave wrongfully denied,etc... ALL so the slugs that ride their butts for a massive  gravy train hand-outs...sucking the postal service into financial oblivion can get an additional BONUS!   GOOD LUCK!
