as a student of mandarin chinese in Taiwan, coming from an english background
in Canada
being able to type in PINYIN with tones is a great help!

i installed the scim-chewing pkg.
then with chinese language added to installed languages
i am able to select chewing from the list of traditional chinese inputs

in order to get the pinyin input activated i have to cycle through the
options chewing offers on the scim toolbar;
default-Hsu's-IBM-GinYieh-ETen-ETen 26key-Dvorak-Dvorak Hsu's-Default(click
one on Default)
at this point i can input via PINYIN.

i'd like to thank the nice people at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM
for making the guide available.
and the developer of CHEWING for making it MUCH easier to input chinese
characters.
