Dear Educators,

I have been a lurker on this list for quite awhile and have learned a lot from reading your discussions.  My organization is still working to figure out whether and how virtual worlds might help us achieve our mission.

Meanwhile, I am meeting with some folks from a local cancer research facility that also does some fantastic outreach and professional development work for science teachers (mainly middle and high school).  They would like to learn about SL and science education.

Can anyone recommend some SL places to show them?  I am particularly looking for a place that demonstrates the immersive capabilities of SL, as distinct from other web 2.0 tools.  (maybe a cell that you can walk thru or a DNA strand that you can walk around, etc.)  These folks are particularly interested in molecular biology and genetics, but I think any good science-y sims might help them get a sense of the possibilities.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations you can offer!

Laura

The University of Houston has an artery you can walk through and
watch it develop atherosclerosis.

They also have a race game that teaches and modifies behavior to reduce
atherosclerosis.

And they have an 80 meter tall left ventricle simulator. You can stand
in the middle of the simulator and see the heart beat, blood flow, give
it a heart attack, etc.

teleport to
http://slurl.com/secondlife/HHP%20at%20UH/102/39/23

take the local teleporter to "Public Learning Experiences" and then choose one of the teleporters there.

The artery simulator requires access to run. Contact Annie Obscure for access.

Hi, Laura,

You might be interested in a recent presentation I did as an RL/SL
event. Slides are here.

<http://www.slideshare.net/umhealthscienceslibraries/health-care-collaboration-community-in-virtual-worlds-second-life>

I have a notecard inworld with LMs for all the locations that are open
to the public. I also have a number of health SL tours set up as
notecards, and you are welcome to these as well.

Other sources of information would include:

SLHealthy
http://slhealthy.wetpaint.com/

For SLHealthy, please use the list in the sidebar, and NOT the Filing
Cabinet. The Filing Cabinet is dated and not maintained. THe most
current information is always in the sidebar navigation menu.

Videos I've helped with:

Science Learning Opportunities in Second Life:
<http://www.lib.umich.edu/hsl/flash/sciencelearning2l.html>

Second Life and Public Health: <http://www.lib.umich.edu/hsl/flash/slph.html>

Virtual Health (a Second Life Tour):
<http://www.lib.umich.edu/hsl/flash/pandersonsl.html>

You may also wish to join the Healthcare Education group. You can find
it listed in my profile, Perplexity Peccable.

For what you describe, I love the Big Cell on Genome Island, the Giant
Testes by DrDoug Pennell, and the treasure hunt humorous clinic model
on the research space in NMC.

Holler if you need anything. :)
