I am thinking of asking for a route re-measurement.  My route is 29.5 miles and I consistently drive 32-33 miles.  I can't imagine that pulling in to service boxes adds that much.   Any pitfalls i should be aware of?  Does the district send someone or does the PM and myself do it?

Our district sends someone down. They actually have a vehicle that you ride along in and it has an odometer that records even in reverse. That way it gives an accurate measurement of turnarounds, etc.

Depending upon the number of boxes you have the average difference between the way it is measured and the in and out that we actually drive is about 10% of the total mileage now add the mileage for parcels and accountables and you are probably right on.  Take some time after work one day and drive it before you ask for the remeasurement.

good luck with that now , most mileage cars are now history , if they choose to measure it with a different vehicle, make sure they checked  the mileage on the interstate for accuracy

A carrier in my office got a mileage check and went down 4 miles. They checked the vehicles accuracy in the parking lot(No kidding). I had a new truck and checked it by going on the interstate and checking the mileage by the federal measured mile markers and was right on. I rode with in the middle of the road and checked the mileage and she drove 2 other vehicles and we all measured the same except the po vehicle. Union was on her side and then the person at the district always disappeared when the remeasurement was to happen.Long story is remeasurment never happened route is screwed out of 4 miles.BEWARE

In our district a hub PM is sent in. The state steward usually comes to ride along and you may ride with. You do not get credit for pulling up to boxes or the additional distance that comes from turning around. I probably would check it with GPS before asking for a remeasurement.

The carrier in our office that got screwed also used a GPS and it couldn't be used against what they measured it at.Also the 4 miles lost was with more boxes that got cut off another route. She got less mileage then what it was before any where added on.Only at the post office.

You may get turn around mileage but we don't. The measurements I know of had a state steward riding on the remeasure. The more I read this site the more I see how many different ways everything is handled around the country.

GPS measurement is a good idea!  Here is another one I found.  GoogleEarth has a measurement tool where you can click a line along your route!  My measurement came out on google earth about 3/4 mile less than the evaluation, but i wasn't too exact drawing lines and no doubt cut corners.  I will attempt it again in a more (zoomed in) mode to be more precise. Its kinda time consuming.

had my route measured about two years ago.  they sent someone out and had me drive the route as normal, without pulling up to each box. auditor had me reset the trip odometer and back about a 1/4 of a mile to show that the odometer registered both forward and reverse. then went inside the garage were i normally park, reset the odometer again, and drove the route, parking back  inside again on return.  i gained about .2 , but that was enough to add a mile a day to my ema.  if you don't have the exact size of tires on your car as what it came with, you can almost expect the readings to be off 1-2% or even more. (usually listed on the drivers door label)
