Reading this, I came up with an idea (dont know if it is a good one)

What if everything except the "editing area" was dimmed when editiing, a little like greybox/slimbox galleries does now

In the report of one of my interviews, on which I based the visual noise theory, I suggest dimming the site around the editing part. I put it online for your reading with two example pictures at:
http://groups.google.nl/group/researching-plone-ui/files

the rtf file turned out to be 5MB containing the two images, strange.
I am curious what you think of it.

Greetings, Laurens Kling

This is a common UI design pattern which helps users concentrate on
the task in hand so I'd agree this is a good idea. BTW in my UI design
course one of the "psychological principles" of UI design is said to
be, "users have difficulty focusing on more than one activity at a
time" -- so this helps them concentrate on the task in hand.

I tried to find some other examples of this -- the screen grabs from
the O'Reilly book Designing Web Interfaces (well worth a look IMHO)
are on Flickr. Here's one which does something similar to the editing
effect, although it's more of a "lightbox" pop-up:

Cheers,
David

... as plone ... big

I will try to read it (when I have the time!).
If possible, maybe you should include a "top conclusions".

Mine would be:
1) After (for example) adding an image, you need to go back to add another (= where did the add-menu go , and time consuming)
2) "Tone down, as on page 56,  I have been trying to do this (= is it possible to load a stylesheet just when editing? then it could all be done with transparency, maybe

* { transparency: 30%  }
#name_of_kupu_edit_area/column-content { transparency: "none" }

By the way: I use the actions-menu: copy/paste (people put things in wrong places), rename (= want a shorter url, but dont want everybody to write in the id)

Hey Espen,

thanks for your reply. Yeah, it's a big document, but it has seperate
chapters which you can read seperatly. You can read the summary as a
sort of "top conclussions", but you've already read that chapter as my
last blog post.

In my opion, it's worth the time reading, but then again, it's my own
document ;)

Maybe we can discuss some subjects next week in Sorrento?

greetings,
Laurens

Hello Plone UI team.

The last couple of months I've been researching the UI of Plone for the
benefit of improving it from an end users point of view. The results of
my research can be found on
http://researching-plone-ui.googlegroups.com/web/researching-plone-ui.pdf

I hope you'll enjoy it and hopefully talk to you soon. You can leave any
comment.

Greetings,

Laurens Kling
