Hello All,

I’m placing this question here wondering if others have taken specific steps I can follow to speed up our website: www.iicd.org.

I’ve had complaints about the speed and when measuring it here http://www.vertain.com the result is disconcerting, 8.36 seconds to load the homepage :<… and this when an important part of our target group uses dial-up from Africa and Latin America!

The total size of the homepage, scripts and stylesheets included is 518 kb uncompressed.

Suggestions for improvements are very welcome!

Regards,

Nynke

Hi Nynke

I can see straight away one thing that will be causing your website to
be very slow  and that is that you have the debug setting portal_css
setting turned on as I can see all your css files are being loaded
separately rather than be merged together.

If you go into the the ZMI for your site click on portal_css make sure
that the Debug/development mode is unticked.

You might also want to have a look at the options you have enabled in
the zope.conf file and make sure you don't have other debugging
options turned on.

cheers
John

Hi Nynke,

Do you use a some kind of caching server infront of Zope. E.g. Zope -> Apache -> Squid will speed up your site with a factor 10.

Kind regards,

Jean-Paul

You can also use CacheFu that it built into Plone 2.5. Use this as well
as an Apache front end. I've also found that setting Apache up to do
compression makes a huge difference. It appears that you can also do
this at the CacheFu level but I have never tried it. With these measures
in place, I've never needed squid (so far).

Cheers,
Sam.

Thank you all very much!

I will definitely get it out of debug mode! Hadn't realized that was
still on.

I know some form of caching is being applied, but I'd have to check with
Amaze to see which one exactly.

I also got the tip that reducing the resolution of the pictures could
also help significantly.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

Nynke

Also, turn off unnecessary css and js for unauthenticated users by
adding "not: portal/portal_membership/isAnonymousUser" to the conditions
in the css and js registries where appropriate.

generated.css is a particularly good target for this treatment; it's
huge and its main application is adding content-type icons in
navigation. There's also no need to send authoring and member support
css and js to unauthenticated users.

looking for plone expert for maternity leave

Dear plone people,

I am looking for a Plone expert for one (flexible) day a week. February till June 2010, in Amsterdam.

From February till June 2010 I will be on maternity leave. I'm working three days a week as a communication officer for SOMO (www.somo.nl) in Amsterdam, and I am responsible for the technical maintenance and part of the content of six plone websites. The content of these websites is connected through a central cms and is also available in different languages.

For my work concerning communication and webcontent, I will have a replacement for two days a week. For the technical assistance of my colleagues and maintenance of the websites I am looking for someone who is more then an average user on plone. You don't have to be a programmer, as the programming work is done by Zest Software, but you have to have an idea of making simple css changes, finding your way in the ZMI, changing templates (in the custom folder), and solving all kind of problems with installing content items. Besides this you are able to discuss new website wishes with my colleagues and to estimate the relevance for developing new tools or to be able to find simple solutions.

You work on average for one day a week and will be a few hours a week present at the office, but are available the whole week for emergencies and problems. Preferably you speak some Dutch. Salary will be discussed.

Are you this person, or do you know someone: please let me know.

Kind regards,

Edith
