Having only one language shown at once to a user of the site is the only
reasonable approach. For the content editing UI you can remove this
lockstep, so editors have their admin UI elements in a known language,
but content in a different language.

Any object should get its unique identifier / location also known as
URI/URL. The W3C recommends to set up top language folders via
http://domain/da/page http://domain/en/page to ensure this. If you care
about your pages being indexed by search engines, having different URL's
for different language versions of a page is a must. Search robots will
access pages without any form of headers or browser preferences. If you
hide your pages under some form of redirection rules, search robots will
only index one default language version of each page.

LinguaPlone has the concept of language independent fields. So for each
of your content types you can determine which fields should share their
value across all languages and which fields are actually different in
each language. Typically categories or ids would be language independent
where titles and descriptions are language dependent.

The de-facto "official" multi-language support for Plone is LinguaPlone.
The multilingualplone effort is an attempt to build an Archetypes
independent and more flexible multi-lingual solution for Plone, but is
still in its early stages. If you want to invest into this effort that
would certainly be more than welcome, but it's going to be some rather
large investment potentially in the scope of hundreds of hours.
