Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)
Hello!  I am using Audacity version 1.2.6 with Windows XP service pack 2.  After installation I keep getting an error message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close".  This usually happens when closing a pop up window but sometimes just randomly.  It effects all web browsing.  I uninstalled and the problem disappeared. Then reinstalled and the problem came back.

Any suggestions?
Thank you.

    | I am using Audacity version 1.2.6 with Windows XP service pack 2.

Unless you got a faulty installation of Audacity because you had Internet
Explorer running when you installed it (in theory you should close all other
possible programs and processes when installing any program), what you
are seeing might be coincidental. As long as the operating system is not
corrupted you can generally on XP get away with installing while other
programs are running, but you certainly can't on Windows 98.

If the problem won't go away then try the following:

Uninstall Audacity again then I would create a Restore Point in System
Restore (click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System
Restore) then go to the Windows Registry (Start > Run and type "regedit"
without quotes). Navigate to the top of the tree (My Computer) in the
left-hand window, then CTRL + F  and find all instances of "audacity" and
delete the registry key in the left-hand pane. You should not find many
instances, but this will in any case delete your Audacity Preferences which
will otherwise persist even after uninstallation.

Then in Internet Explorer go Tools > Windows Update and accept all the
"high-priority" updates that are offered plus any concerned with Internet
Explorer, download and install them and reboot into Safe Mode:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#02

Then install Audacity, and reboot into Windows as normal. If you have
unexpected problems after editing the Registry, restore the computer to
the Restore Point you created before editing the Registry. If you are
not comfortable editing the Registry, follow all the other suggestions
except editing the Registry.

If you still have problems after this and have Internet Explorer 7 installed
then it is possible to uninstall "Windows Internet Explorer" at Control Panel >
Add / Remove Programs. This will roll you back to a clean installation of
Internet Explorer 6.

If the problems you describe still continue after all the above, then do full
virus and spyware scans.
