I am having great difficulty recording with Audacity. Very often, but not
always, I get an error message reading:
Cant open file
'c:\docume~1\davidf~1\locals~1\audacity_1_2_temp\b00101.au'(error2:the
system cannot find the file specified.)
At that point the front half of whatever I have recorded is wiped clean.
What am I doing wrong?
David Fry

    | At that point the front half of whatever I have recorded is wiped clean.
    | I am running Windows XP and using Audacity supplied by ION with a
    | turntable and the only reference I can get is from an ION booklet that
    | mentions Audacity 1-2-3.

You can always check what version of Audacity you are using at Help >
About Audacity in the program. If you are not using the current Audacity
version (1.2.6), please upgrade to it here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows

Are you getting these errors when actually in the process of recording, or
when opening a saved .aup Project file with File > Open? If this occurs
when recording, then the best thing to do is to go the Audacity temporary
folder, manually delete all the .au files in there and record a fresh LP from
the start. You can find the location of the Audacity temporary folder by
going to the Directories tab of Audacity Preferences - the Preferences are
at the bottom of the Edit menu.

If the error occurs when opening an .aup Project file, make sure you are not
opening the .aup.bak backup of the Project, as this may refer to .au files
which are no longer in the _data folder as a result of subsequent edits you
have made to the Project.

Please see our help page on USB turntables for future reference:

Thank you for your response. I have downloaded Audacity 1.2.6., cleared my
temporary folder as advised and recorded another LP. On completion  I have
saved this to my documents/music by way of Export as WAV. Looking at the
visual recording on Audacity at this point, there is a flat line from the
beginning up to the end. the "recording" on My Music shows 322mb recorded
but it is blank. I received, at the point of trying to export the file, the
same error message as before.

What is going wrong?

    | (error2:the system cannot find the file specified.)

Up to the point when you get the error when exporting, do you have a
recorded blue waveform with peaks and troughs on screen like this one?
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/track_audio.htm

I know you said what you recorded was wiped clean, but I'm not sure
if you mean the audio is deleted from the timeline or if a valid waveform
that you had recorded is silenced.

If not, please ensure the problem is not emanating from the turntable by
reading Section 8.4 of our help page on USB turntables:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=USB_turntables

Supposing you exit Audacity, clear out its temporary folder again, restart
Audacity then click Generate > Tone and click OK.  Do you get the same
error if you then File > Export as WAV? If you do, you could try running
Audacity in Compatibility mode. Right-click on audacity.exe in Explorer >
Properties > Compatibility tab > check box to enable compatibility with
Windows 2000. That is a long shot, but sometime clears hard to explain
problems.

If problems persist you could try the 1.3.3 Beta version of Audacity - install
it into a different folder than 1.2.6 (the .exe installer will choose a different
installation folder automatically). I have seen a problem occasionally in 1.2.6
such that when trying to record, an error is thrown that an .au file in the
temporary folder cannot be found. Recording proceeds (sometimes with
repeat errors), but only a flat line is drawn. Exiting Audacity and ensuring its
temporary folder is empty almost always solves it. On one occasion where it
did not, rebooting solved the problem.
