Hi Dave,

Early September is going to be pretty awful for me. I'd be able to
make a meeting September 3rd, but that'd be about it until later in
the month.

Cheers,
Phil

Will there be spare GPS devices for the OSM event?  I haven't purchased mine yet (still haven't decided between a more common GPS device and an OpenMoco)

We were waiting hear back from the OSM folks.

We were thinking a joint meeting between OSM community and OSGEO community in Ottawa, but that can happen anytime realy.

I think there was a mapping event going on at the end of the month.

Are you suggesting that the OpenMocco has GPS capabilities? ... I could not find any reference other than photographic motion timelaps.... (http://openmoco.org)   Please provide ref if openMocco is offering GPS capabilities

Unless you are refering to (http://wiki.openmoko.org) which is geared at an Open source mobile phone software stack.... Which has an article about the Neo FreeRunner GPS (http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_FreeRunner_GPS)

I was told that the Neo FreeRunner had a good GPS receiver in it, and I
was planning on doing more research.  Unfortunately work and other things
have been keeping me busy, and I haven't spent the time yet.  It is just
my preference to have entirely unlocked hardware with FLOSS software.  It
might turn out that the Neo won't fill my needs (OpenMoco or Android,
given Android has been ported to that hardware as well).

Just for the record,

NeoFreerunner use OpenMoko (with a K not a c)... OpenMoco is closely named but quite a different project (as I found out when googling openmoco.

For a locat Toronto distributor check out

http://koolu.com/Sales/Buy-FreeRunner-Now.html

Apparently only targeted to developers at this point and not ready for general sale.

I too can do the 3rd, or later in the month.  I'm away in between.

Given that we met pretty recently, I suggest that if a bunch of people
pipe up soon that they would like to meet on the 3rd, I'm happy to
book it -- but if that doesn't happen, I suggest that late in the
month, with a potential OSM tie-in, be the plan.

Cheers,
Scott

Sorry about the delay.

Yes, you were right, David. The OSM person from BC is not able to make it and as such, I don't really have any presenters on the topic. I could do a short talk, but I think Richard Weait's talk from FOSSLC's SummerCamp was much better.

Are people interested in a mapping party?  Everyone head out to a certain area with maps from walking-papers.org or their GPS, then we meet back at an area with wifi and update the map together.
If anyone is interested in the mapping party, let me know and I'll plan it for the end of the month.

Cheers,
Teresa

What type of data are we trying to map?

My understanding is that in Canada the full road network is provided by NRCAN to OSM. So would the purpose be to map other features?  Such as?

Such as prominent buildings, schools, pubs, walking trails - since newer ones wouldn't be in the NRCAN data, and the like. If road names have changed recently, they would also have to be corrected. Some buildings and paths are already included, but Majors Hills Park, for example, does not have many paths in it.

After Richard Weait's talk I went to my neighbourhood and noticed we
weren't there.  In place of our streets was a tracks that had physically
been gone from this location for a long time.

I just looked and our neighbourhood is now there:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=45.370601&lon=-75.666139&zoom=18&layers=B000FTF
. I was wondering if this was done by volunteers, but it may be that OSM
just received updated maps from NRCAN.

Is there documentation somewhere that describes this data donation?  I'm
always curious when a Canadian government (any level) is opening up data.
This is always good as an example when talking to the next
department/project/etc for releasing data.

IE: I'd love Canada Post postal code data to be released.  There is a
specific usage for public participation that is currently restricted by

Do you think it might be advantageous for everyone to meet up first, before heading out with their GPS? Some people might have questions about how to use their GPS properly for this activity - what settings to use for tracking, for instance. Then people could head out and meet up again to put the map together.
Just a thought.

Such as prominent buildings, schools, pubs, walking trails - since newer ones wouldn't be in the NRCAN data, and the like. If road names have changed recently, they would also have to be corrected. Some buildings and paths are already included, but Majors Hills Park, for example, does not have many paths in it.

What type of data are we trying to map?

My understanding is that in Canada the full road network is provided by NRCAN to OSM. So would the purpose be to map other features?  Such as?

Cheers

Sorry about the delay.

Yes, you were right, David. The OSM person from BC is not able to make it and as such, I don't really have any presenters on the topic. I could do a short talk, but I think Richard Weait's talk from FOSSLC's SummerCamp was much better.

Are people interested in a mapping party?  Everyone head out to a certain area with maps from walking-papers.org or their GPS, then we meet back at an area with wifi and update the map together.
If anyone is interested in the mapping party, let me know and I'll plan it for the end of the month.

Cheers,
Teresa

Any update on Septembers OSM event?

I might have saw a post to the BC OSGEO list saying someone from OSM was
not going to make it to Ottawa. Was this our person?

Any updates?

Cheers

Is there an effort to mass geocode (and store) some of these features and feed them to OSM. Although walking is great fun perhaps walking could be used to verify the locations of batch geocoding results.

For instance there are batch geocoder services that can consume spreadsheets with adresses (http://batchgeocoder.com/).

And there are loads of hidden address lists around for city locations and sites....

Libraries (I did compile this list a few years back, might be able to track it down): http://www.biblioottawalibrary.ca/explore/branches/loc_e.html#branch

Sample list of schools from OCDSB: (needs some normalizing): http://www.ocdsb.edu.on.ca/cc_mo_Our_Schools.asp

Trails: Ahhh my favourite... this is a great example of something that is hard to come by.... I met an artist that wanted to sketch out maps of shortcuts in Ottawa... the artist would lay interactive art out on these paths for people to enjoy...  Shortcuts have also been used in city planning to determine where trail hardening might be useful.

Anyhow, just some thoughts...

If you plan an event let the list know.

For a presentation I would love to learn how to get data dumps from OSM to be used in a GIS. Currently i feel that OSM is tied up in its own data format without easy conversion tools. I hope to be proved ill-informed.

Cheers
