java-collab svn repo

Evening List:

We have a nice example of OSGeo working out for all parties involved;
as part of a java-collab collaboration GeoTools and Deegree are
looking into setting up a shared geometry library.

Can we ask for an svn repository? http://svn.osgeo.org/java-collab/
would be appropriate (and match the existing email list). It could be
we need to ask to be an OSGeo Lab first? I am not sure ...

Hi Jody,
Great to hear you are getting a GeoTools - deegree collaboration
going! For me setting up a SVN for that under java-collab seems indeed
a good first step. Maybe it can be organized in such a way that it
will be easy to also add other cross project collaborations in the
future.
I suggest you put a ticket for this to the SAC to get the SVN started.
My 2 cents.
Ciao,
Jeroen

Oh I am only the messenger - Andrea and Markus are on the hot seat on this one.

I will take your advice about a ticket.

I'm +1 for creating a svn repository.

I also think that you should create the bare essentials for a project,
which would at least be:
* A web page describing the project, which could be a wiki, or trac
page. I don't see it being necessary to add the project to osgeo labs as
Geotools is already a graduated OSGeo project.

* I suspect you would also want an issue tracker, (which could be
provided by osgeo), but this is not essential.

I guess it would be nice to have also a wiki and a bug tracker instance.
I guess in the end java-collab could be an incubator in which new java
GIS related libraries grow before trying to go through a formal
incubation process.

Cheers
Andrea

Perhaps we can ask the incubation list here for guidance on what an
OSGeo Lab is about?

Jody,

Would you consider doing this within the GeoTools svn instance?   We
can provide a custom committer list for a shared collab area if you like.

My concern with doing a bunch of development in a standalone svn is two
fold.

1) Each svn instance does have some admin and maintenance cost for SAC.

2) It leaves responsibility for the code and management in a neitherworld
between projects.  We have gone to substantial effort for each project to
establish a governance mechanism.  To then do substantive work outside
any of those frameworks is (IMHO) not a great idea.

A number of projects have been establishing /sandbox areas of their
subversion respository to which they grant access to those who aren't
full committers (such as students).  In your case perhaps you could
establish an area to which any geotools or deegree committers would
be permitted access.

Best regards,

I would prefer not to ask at this stage; this being the first batch of
communication in many years we are kind of treating it with kid
gloves. There is no technical reason not to do this in a
geotools/trunk/spike directory.

Yeah I hear you; I need to go ask about (c) and code contribution agreements.

As mentioned above we do have just such an area...  let me go ask.

Just an udpate Frank.

We decided to go with your recommendation - and will be collaborating in:

Under the existing GeoTools code contribution agreement. We will
settle on governance etc as the experiment proceeds.

We will keep your idea of a custom committer list on the table - at
the moment we do not require this.
