is it possible to see posts before they are made public

As the administrator, I want to be able to check posts before I allow them to be seen by other users. I would like to be informed when someone posts a message then I can decide whether or not to allow that post on. Is this possible. I would have thought this would have been a pretty basic function but I haven't seen any options for this, have I not set it up properly

No, we don't have that feature. We do have plans to add it in the future, but for now you must control posts as they appear on the forum.
