i was wondering if anyone knew where it states that carriers are not allowed to give out address information to people who come up to you on your route.  with the internet just about everything is public knowledge especially someone's address.  if someone comes up to you and gives you a name of a person and wants to know where they live are you allowed to tell them or should you tell them to look it up on the computer?

The privacy act forbids us from giving out that kind of information. If someone comes up to you and asks about where so and so lives, You tell them that you can not divuldge that information. If they flash you a badge or a Government ID, you tell them to call the office.

However, you can direct them to an address (2890 Culver St), if they know it.  Just not to the "Smith's" house.

About the only thing we can legally do is confirm if someone is still at an address. I am talking about the inquiries that collection agencies, law enforcement(like child support) and similar send to the postmaster.

We can't even let these agencies know where the person(s) they are looking for currently reside unless a COA was filed and is current. Doesn't matter if we do know where they live now. DOUG

I just read my post to make sure it was clear, should have finished as doesn't even matter if we know where they live now. I didn't want anyone to get the impression that it doesn't matter if we divulge the new address, because it does. One word not typed sure changes the meaning of a statement. DOUG

You can legally confirm or deny any information that they ALREADY have but you're NOT supposed to add anything to it!

Oh ,and you may also give PHYSICAL DIRECTIONS to addresses stated but NOT to locations when asked as to where an INDIVIDUAL is.
