Open Source and Free Mapping Tools - lecture and demonstration
Wednesday, January 21, 2-3pm, room 4-231 (seating available for 50 people)

There has been an explosion of open source and free mapping tools. In this talk we will offer a brief look into the neogeographer's world of online mapping.

Introduction to GIS using free software tools and data
Friday, January 23, 10 am - 12 pm, DIRC (14N-132) (20 computers)

Learn the basics of visualizing and analyzing geographic information and creating your own maps using free, open source software and free data.

Introduction to Google Maps API
Monday, January 26, 2-6 pm, DIRC (14N-132) (20 computers available in the room. Users are invited to bring their own laptops)

Googler Aaron Karp will give a whirlwind tour of the Google Maps API and KML, teaching the basics of each and showing off some of the really fun applications of them, with a sprinkling of Google Earth thrown in for extra fun (like campus maps, interactive panoramas, and fantasy worlds).

Mapping and Using US Census Data
Wednesday, January 28, 2-4 pm, DIRC (14N-132) (20 computers)

The US Census holds an enormous amount of demographic information dating back to 1790. New and interesting relationships can be observed when looking at census data on a map. Come learn about what’s in the US Census and the tools available for mapping it.
