Does anyone know if we have any medical benefits that will insure a full time student till they are older then 22? Bluecross /Blueshield just dropped my son on his 22nd birthday. I thought since the IRS considers full time students up to the age of 24 as dependents that I would be able to keep health insurance for him. Anyone else have this problem or know how to insure someone this age without paying an arm and a leg?
Thanks for any info.........

He will have COBRA benefits.  You can find additional information here www.opm.gov
It is expensive but for kids with health issues it is probably worth the money.  Dependents benefits expire on their 22nd birthday except for the COBRA portion.  His college should offer a group insurance too.

My 4th child just turned 22, all college graduates, and all were dropped while they were in college and had to get other insurance.  Most other companies insure while full time students.  Federal insures ALL dependant children whether in school or not till age 22 - a couple in our office had 19 yr old daughters, not in school, pregnant and covered them!!!

It's not called COBRA, but Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC).  The link is here:

http://www.opm.gov/insure/health/eligibility/tcc.asp

You have to pay the full premium.  You can carry it for 3 years (twice as long as COBRA).

My son turned 22 in June. I called blue cross & blue shield and got quotes on individual policy. The best I could get from them was $79 a month, but it had a high deductable. But that was the same thing anywhere. So, I think I'm going to take it.

Don't be surprised if they say $79 and then after you sign up that the price goes up.  I signed my son up in March, was supposed to be $91 then went up to $150 the next month when they said because he had a pre-existing condition - he has allergies and takes a prescription, they had to increase his payments !  In May I got another letter saying the price was going up again - an across the board increase effective in July!
