Leave it to our mngmnt to not stand behind me! I have a rec bldg with a curbside mailbox. A retired CITY carrier (worse than a reformed smoker) wants to adjust the existing post and attach basically a residential city mailbox to it. It is obviously (i guess only to me) a city box, with a slot 2x7 inches or so and a locking part at the bottom. My contention is that to service this is a 2 handed motion. Sitting forward in my LLV, I must twist to face the box, open the slot with one hand and drop the mail in with my other. My brainiak Sup tells my to open the slot with the letters (some days only 1, maybe 2), then I wouldn't need to turn my body and can use 1 hand!!! In my 30 years as a rural carrier, this takes the cake!!
Anyone know IN WRITING where I can find that this wouldn't conform? Of course all his connections, (he came from a city office and knows NOTHING about rurals) say they can't stop them from erecting this, as it's postmaster approved --yes you idiots for city delivery application!!!

POM 632.3 Door Slot Specifications
The clear rectangular opening in the outside slot plate must be at least
11/2 inches wide and 7 inches long. The slot must have a flap, hinged at the
top if placed horizontally or hinged on the side away from the hinge side of
the door if placed vertically. When an inside hood is used to provide greater
privacy, the hooded part must not be below the bottom line of the slot in the
outside plate if placed horizontally or beyond the side line of the slot in the
outside plate nearest the hinge edge of the door if placed vertically. The hood
at its greatest projection must not be less than 21/16 inches beyond the inside
face of the door. Door slots must be placed no less than 30 inches above the
finished floor line.

If it's the rectangular box with the flap covering the slot on the upper front, I actually find it easier to use than standard boxes. If it's not the box I'm thinking of, well, here's the rule. Works just like your sup says.

Don't remember where it is written, but I always find it when some idiot wants to put up a city box on my route, but I remind the PM that if he allows it he has to pay me extra come mail count.  If you can find it and show it to your PM he'll probably change his mind.

A Door Slot has NOTHING to do with a mailbox.

This is a door slot opening, as in an entry door, where mail is inserted into the slot.  You are confusing two different things.

Been off a week and totaly expect to go back Monday and see this box erected! Spoke with a board member who told me this jerk is puffing out his chest saying he won't back down. Funny thing is, the day after he came to the office complaining, the accountable clerck came around, low and behold there was a .44 cent postage due for him. I NEVER hesitate to pay for my customers, but not him. Smiled as I put the envelope in his box and returned the piece to the office. YEP, you guessed it, next day, the Sup tells me he called complaining I didn't go to the door! Hmmm, Mr Retired City Carrier, don't have too!!! Of course the Sup who doesbn't yet know rurals after 1 1/2 years, tells me we must go to the door with all accountables, to which I replyed NO and showed him the (4241M?- route equation form). The entry for Postage Dues, clearly only has Office time for computing the time amount. 1 point rural carrier-0 reired city carrier. I made the Sup call him back and tell him it was a courtesy for his carrier to either pay the amount or take it to the door (he wasn't happy)! I was agast when I inquired what his reply was and the Sup said, well if that's how you want to treat your customers (Gee thanks for the vote)! I have serviced almost this whole town in my 30 years and have never came across such an errogant couple of men.
If I had possed my trepidation with servicing this box to a reasonable patron, I'm sure they would have realized this box will be a pain in the a**. I hope this customer realizes that he has put a burr under my saddle and will NEVER get that "Service with a smile" that I give the other 530 patrons. Sad but true...
