can't retrieve a file

I am using a 1.2.5 version of Audacity on my MAC book pro using MAC OS X 10.4. I recorded an audio file (chant) using Audacity and save the project.  Then, I  reopened the project to edit and saved it.  When I went back to the file, there was only a file name of "oli Kahea NaHanona #13D661.aup.bak". The original project was saved as "Oli Kahea NaHanona.aup".  I am not sure if the file gets changed after editing but I cant open the file that ends with aup.bak.  the error message keeps saying, " can't open file/Oli Kahea Na Hanona #13D661-Data/b00158.au (error 2: No such a file or copy).  I really need this file.  How do i retrieve it?? HELP

Very desperate,
rperkins

You need to open an .aup file because an .aup.bak is a copy of an earlier
saved state of the Project, which is why you cannot open the Project properly
with an .aup.bak file when you have made subsequent edits to the Project and
so changed the files in the _data folder.

It looks to me though as if you have confused yourself by not updating the
original Project with File > Save Project. This will always update the original
.aup file and _data folder and keep their same names, but it seems you have
used File > Save Project As.. and given the Project a new name:

Oli Kahea Na Hanona #13D661.aup

which is why there is now a _data folder called

Oli Kahea Na Hanona #13D661_data

I suggest you look in Finder for all .aup files (not .aup.bak files) starting with
"Oli" and then open the most recent one, which should give you the most
recent saved state of your Project.

Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)
I looked every where on the computer and it says it was created on the correct day but there is no .aup for this audio.  There is only the .aup.bak on my computer under finder.

    | I looked every where on the computer and it says it was created
    | on the correct day but there is no .aup for this audio.  There is
    | only the .aup.bak on my computer under finder.

In that case you must have deleted the .aup file accidentally. You can
recover the recording to the state it was saved in at the time by piecing
together the .au audio files in the folder called:

Oli Kahea Na Hanona #13D661_data

or in any other _data folders called Oli if they are more recent.

For help piecing together the .au files please see:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=CrashRecovery

As for the best recovery tool to use for the job, you can use either of the
ones listed on the above page, but this requires (Audacity Recovery Utility)
either installing Python and wxPython and following the instructions on:
http://www.mesw.de/audacity/recovery/

as for Linux, or (command line utility) compiling the utility from source code.
As it may be easier, you can instead use this utility if you are on an Intel Mac:
http://homerow.net/audacity/audacity_recovery_osx_intel.zip

or this if you are on a Power PC:
http://homerow.net/audacity/audacity_recovery_osx_ppc.zip

(If you are on a Power PC, please upgrade to Audacity 1.2.6).

Then follow the general instructions from halfway down the
http://www.mesw.de/audacity/recovery/

page.

Please note there is a 2 GB maximum size for any WAV file created from the
reconstructed temporary files and there may be errors if this size is exceeded.
This implies an upper limit of 2 000 .au files. Sometimes (probably due to
bugs in the utilities) there can be errors before this limit is reached. In that
case you would need to split the .au files in the temporary folder into two or
more groups, each containing consecutively numbered files, and recover each
group separately.
