audacity crashed frozen temp files

Hi,

I was in the middle of an irreplaceable recording and audacity
crashed-- mac 10.4.10 and audacity 1.26.

When I restart audacity it says the files are in the temp folder but
I can't locate them anywhere on my drive and that I need to use
another program to recover them.

Any suggestions?

I am sad.

Thanks
Cheryl

Please have a look at our Frequently Asked Question:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=files&i=crash-recovery

and the Wiki page linked thereon:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=CrashRecovery

There is help there on locating the folder containing the temporary files.

As for the best recovery tool to use to piece the files in the temporary folder
together, you can use either of the ones listed on the above page, but this
requires (Audacity Recovery Utility) either installing Python and wxPython
and following the instructions on:
http://www.mesw.de/audacity/recovery/

as for Linux, or (command line utility) compiling the utility from source code.
As it may be easier, you can instead use this utility if you are on an Intel Mac:
http://homerow.net/audacity/audacity_recovery_osx_intel.zip

or this if you are on a Power PC:
http://homerow.net/audacity/audacity_recovery_osx_ppc.zip

then follow the general instructions from halfway down the
http://www.mesw.de/audacity/recovery/

page.

Please note there is a 2 GB maximum size for any WAV file created from the
reconstructed temporary files and there may be errors if this size is exceeded.
This implies an upper limit of 2 000 .au files. Sometimes (probably due to
bugs in the utilities) there can be errors before this limit is reached. In that
case you would need to split the .au files in the temporary folder into two or
more groups, each containing consecutively numbered files, and recover each
group separately.

Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)
thanks for the reply but it didn't work. no temp folder found. i wouldn't have trusted the program if i had realized it has a tendency to be unreliable and crash.

lesson learned.

Any program on a computer has a tendency to be unreliable and crash if
you have system problems such as a shortage of memory, or if the
program uses the inbuilt sound device as ours does and the device has
unreliable drivers.  Please see these pages for helpful advice:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Updating_Sound_Device_Drivers
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Managing_Computer_Resources_and_Drivers

May we ask what you were recording and is this an Intel Mac, or a Power PC
like a G5?  If this was an internet broadcast and you were recording it by
running a cable from line-out to line-in, we don't recommend that. Recording
streaming audio is poorly supported on Macs and we recommend you use
a third party program like Audio Hijack to capture the sound directly from the
application:
http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/

Please note that unless the computer died completely when Audacity crashed
then almost certainly you do still have the recorded data in the temporary
folder. Also if the whole computer crashed it does indicate possible problems
with the sound device. Have you actually followed the instructions we gave
you, for example have you gone to Audacity > Preferences in the program,
looked on the Directories tab to find out the location of the temporary folder,
and then looked inside that folder? Please also note as the instructions at:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=CrashRecovery

state, temporary folders are normally hidden on Macs. Did you follow the
instructions to make the temporary folder accessible? Basically if you exit
Audacity and restart it, and it asks if you want to delete temporary files,
you still have your recording. Tell it you don't want to delete the temporary
files, and then simply follow the instructions you have been given.
