I noticed that Al was having to deal with some very long discussions
with Gale, that had some "*strongly disagree*" type phases from Gale. So
I wrote Al off-list, suggesting that he needn't always take the bait,
that although Gale is opinionated and prolix, he has no actual
background in GUI and is not an authority, among other points. Al
responded that from reading the list, he had thought Gale really was an
authority. I think Al's pretty well informed and savvy, so I just want
to point out this further example that there is a danger in Gale's
authoritative demeanor and word-count dominance on the list, in turning
off new and continuing developers, or making them think his opinions are
well-informed. I had a somewhat similar off-list with Ed, so I think
they both now have a better understanding of how far down the road of ad
infinitum they actually need to go with Gale.

Somebody else pointed out to me, and there was an example yesterday, of
Gale writing things to users along the lines "we have changed the code
to fix that", so noobs think he actually is a developer.

Not suggesting any action beyond being vigilant that Gale's messages be
monitored for their relation to reality. Just want you all to have this
extra info.

And on a positive note, Al's experience in other FOSS projects does make
him aware that "it's not like any of y'all are my boss." Right on.

Oh, boy. I'm VERY sorry I sent this to the list. T-bird did the wrong
completion on the address and I didn't notice it.

I absolutely meant it to be off-list. Please throw rotten food at me. I
apologize and am hitting myself in the head with a hammer. Feel free to
write some truly nasty things about me. I deserve to be publicly shunned.

Gale, I apologize. You do tons and tons of excellent work for Audacity
and are working especially hard these days. I don't think there's
anything in this that you didn't surmise was my opinion, from our
discussions in the past, but I was too blunt in this message for it to
be public, and I didn't mean it to be. And as I'm nobody's boss, it's
just my stinky perspective. Anyway, I really am very sorry.

Very big "Oops" indeed - have a tomato.
I've noticed a lot of strong opinions and robust argument on the list - it tends to be a natural consequence when people engage with things that they are passionate about. As long as we all remember that we're all on the same side and respect that each has different talents then I think we are all grown up enough to handle it.
