I noticed that Al was having to deal with some very long discussions
with Gale, that had some "*strongly disagree*" type phases from Gale. So
I wrote Al off-list, suggesting that he needn't always take the bait,
that although Gale is opinionated and prolix, he has no actual
background in GUI and is not an authority, among other points. Al
responded that from reading the list, he had thought Gale really was an
authority. I think Al's pretty well informed and savvy, so I just want
to point out this further example that there is a danger in Gale's
authoritative demeanor and word-count dominance on the list, in turning
off new and continuing developers, or making them think his opinions are
well-informed. I had a somewhat similar off-list with Ed, so I think
they both now have a better understanding of how far down the road of ad
infinitum they actually need to go with Gale.
Somebody else pointed out to me, and there was an example yesterday, of
Gale writing things to users along the lines "we have changed the code
to fix that", so noobs think he actually is a developer.
Not suggesting any action beyond being vigilant that Gale's messages be
monitored for their relation to reality. Just want you all to have this
extra info.
And on a positive note, Al's experience in other FOSS projects does make
him aware that "it's not like any of y'all are my boss." Right on.
