The .dak files are nothing to do with Audacity unless you chose to
rename them with dak extension.

An Audacity project produces an .aup file (which is a small text file),
and a _data folder with the same name (this is very large, containing
many individual .au audio files which are referenced in the .aup file).

There may also be an .aup.bak file. This only exists if you saved the
project more than once and is a copy of the previously saved .aup file
before you updated it by saving it again.

You can delete all these files and folders once you are sure you have
exported an audio file like WAV or MP3 from the cassette recording that
you are completely happy with.

The link to reset 1.2 Preferences is still in this message further towards
the bottom, but here it is again:

There is such a site -

www.recordcollectorsguild.org

....including a forum which discusses vinyl to digital transfers. Many
RCG-ers, including myself, use Audacity.

There is such a site -

www.recordcollectorsguild.org

....including a forum which discusses vinyl to digital transfers. Many
RCG-ers, including myself, use Audacity.

Unfortunately, because collectors of the really old stuff (I know
people who collect cylinders) rarely want to trade actual records,
most of this kind of trading tends to be in MP3 form, and the
commercial recording industry now keeps a close eye on that kind of
thing on the Web. The stuff went into the public domain a long time
ago (the same goes for 45s from the early 50s), but the record
companies managed to get the law changed to allow them to "reclaim
copyright" by issuing commercial CDs (a concept that is directly
opposite to the original intent of copyright law; a lot of judges
actually seem to think that publishing public-domain information in
commercial form somehow makes that information the property of the
publisher). Even before the change in the law, lawyers representing
the big record companies did a pretty good job of intimidating people
who engaged in such trading by convincing them that they were somehow
in violation of the law, as if they were trading current material.
There used to be a thing called Audiogalaxy, which was similar to the
original Napster except that it consisted largely of collectors of
old music trading electronic copies, but the people who ran it
finally shut it down because they were convinced they were going to
get sued. The record companies did the same thing in the 1920s, when
radio stations began broadcasting dance music. At any rate, it's a
little chancy to trade even very old music in electronic form on the
Internet without having to pay somebody. And if you're willing to do
that, you might as well go to websites like Musicstack, and pay other
collectors who are selling the actual records to one another. Most
trading of MP3s now occurs either between individual collectors using
something like FTP, or on IRC (Internet Relay Chat), which is still
so user unfriendly that the record companies don't seem concerned about it.

There are already forums where collectors talk to one another, as on
here. Collectors who meet there often begin talking to one another by
email and exchanging music that way (or by FTP). I haven't been on
one of them for a long time (I've pretty much stopped acquiring new
stuff and am concentrated on getting what I have organized and dubbed
to CDR), and I don't remember the names of any such websites offhand,
but Google searches for the names of old-time artists and/or song
titles will usually turn up a couple.

Not for awhile. I've sort of dropped out of all that, the last few years.
