Hi
you would find that on most tape decks the record and play are interlocked and to stop the recording you can hit stop or record, the play button starts the mechanism playing and at the same time record amp is turned on.
    THANKYOU DAVE-211

In words of one syllable, what are you trying to do? What stops Audacity
recording the "silent" parts if you want to do so?

Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)
Leonard:
OK, time for some troubleshooting ...

To summarize: you're recording a cassette side into Audacity. You click record in Audacity then play on the deck then walk away. You come back and Audacity has gotten into loop-play (that's the arrows in opposite direction on the play button in Audacity). There are silent parts in the cassette recording.

The play button should show loop play only when the shift key is held down. Is your shift key sticky?

Does this happen with every cassette you try, or just this one? Has it happened just once, or every time you try to record this cassette?

Is your hard disk full?

What version of Audacity are you running? What computer are you running it on (PC, Mac, XP, Vista, Windows 7, OSX 10.4, 10.5)?

If you are running Audacity 1.3.x, look in the Transport menu -  do you have "Sound Activated Recording" checked?

What "config" are you talking about that was in previous versions but not in the version you have now?

Do you have a cat? :-)

im not sure...its during a 45 minate non stop cassette tape side.when im ready to record the side i just hit the record button and let it alone.to record,,,the somehow the play button
gets pushed and there these arrows in the button pointing in oppisit direction while the m-
usic on the deck keeps playing...there are alot of pauses during the tape but i dont wanrt
to do anything about that.in previous vwersions of audacity i could config it for this very pro-
blem but i cant find it in this latest version....

In words of one syllable, what are you trying to do? What stops Audacity
recording the "silent" parts if you want to do so?

Lenny:

What version of Audacity?

There may have been effects to "measure silences", but not a preference setting. I'm not aware of any preference for choosing the length of time to record except the "Timer Record" choice in the Transport menu.

It's time for desperate measures. Assuming you're running Audacity version 1.3.x, go to:

Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Audacity\audacity.cfg

and trash the "audacity.cfg" file or move it somewhere else, like the desktop. This will set Audacity back to a "virgin" state. You will lose the connection to the LAME MP3 library, so make sure you know how to find it again.
