Hi all,

We're back and have Young Rewired State confirmed!

Young Rewired State will be in Google's Victoria offices on the 22nd
and 23rd of August. We're aiming to have 50 15-18 year old hackers
with at least some basic hacking skills, and 20 of you guys there.

More info is at
http://blog.rewiredstate.org/post/134717772/young-rewired-state

Thanks,
James

This is definitely something I am interested in, obviously it is easy
for me as my father lives in London and it's only a short train journey
away from my house.  Is anyone else contemplating signing up?

I'll turn up if DFEY decides to make it an "outing".

I suppose it depends on if there are too many people wanting placements.
It also requests that people signing up should have a degree of
programming ability, and that might not apply to everyone at DFEY.

They claim to be aiming at an age group from 15+.
As as far as I know, DFEY is the only group of it's kind, I should think
the programming abilities of a non-technical 15year old involved in DFEY
will probably still outweigh the programming abilities of the average
teenager not involved in DFEY.

I don't know but I imagine most people involved or interested in DFEY
would have the level of technical experience needed. I'll invite the
organisers to join the list anyway - one has said he will be there
2morro btw - perhaps they can answer some questions.

Let's see how 2morro goes, and then perhaps we'll see if there is
anywhere/anyone who can help the North-West contingent make an appearance.

It's a pity to be honest it's not in the North-West (well from my point
of view at least!), we'll have to see if we can kick start some of the
larger stuff up here. :)

I think it's meant to be a youth version of the rewird state conference
they ran earlier this year -there's information about the 'adult'
version on the web but I haven't read it.

Fist thing to ask is who else is going to be watching? As with
anything vaguely hacker related, you need to be careful what you
reveal and if you even go - we all know there are gov watch lists, and
the question is, do you want to be on one? I for one, would not want
to be, with the fact that I know that nobody is squeaky clean, and if
they want to, they can always pick you up for something.

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but it's always something to look out for -
black, white or gray hat.

thanks,

I was kind of under the impression that "hacker" was being used in its
proper sense - hobbyist programmers, or so.

Also, fuck the government.

Some people may be aware that I met one of the organisers of Young
Rewired State - James - at 2morro yesterday.

He was really positive about getting DFEY (including the NW contingent)
to the event.

Some of the other people I was talking to who are backing and helping at
the event are also very eager for us to go. The event has only recently
been confirmed so everything is still a little bit tentative, however
they seemed confident that there would be some assistance for those who
wished to travel from far afield.

I'm going to follow all this up, but for the time being just get 22nd
and 23rd of August in your diary!

Cheers

Tim

Hi,

I'm very interested in this and have read the blog post.. the fact
that they say they could maybe provide accommodation for the night is
very interesting (not necessarily for me, but for those who maybe come
down from the NW).
I have no hacking, coding, website design experience, but I had a chat
with Tim Dobson on IRC this morning and he seemed to think that it
wouldn't be much of a problem as I'm involved in DFEY and teenlinux
groups anyway.  I'm happy that I may be able to go as it is an amazing
thing to get involved in and meet new people (and some of you lot
hopefully!).

I'll be keeping my eyes open for more information.

Hi all,

I'm James Darling, one of the founders of Rewired State, I may have met a few of you at 2morro conference.

I've finally sorted out the website, including a description of the skills required. Please do sign up at http://rewiredstate.org/young

If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to email me, or come visit us at #rewiredstate IRC room on freenode.

I pretty much assume that if you're on this list, you'll be perfect.

Look forward to hearing from you,
James

I applied on the older website that was much less AJAX-y a week or so ago; should I reapply now?

Thanks

I will talk to my parents and see if I can come, but it is less than a
week after we move to England from France after 4 years, so it might
be a bit of a problem but they generally seem positive about me
coming, even if they do accompany me (probably for the best, but they
will obviously leave me there and go and wander round London!).  As I
said in my previous email, I am very excited and have never been to
anything like this before, but even my limited experience seems to
meet with the skill requirements.  I am really looking forward to
this!

Thanks for the information!

Hey James,

I'm 19. Should I assume that this is "close enough" to the 15-18
requirement that I can basically pretend to be a few months younger?
Assuming this is the case, I may like to come along - I'm in London
during August anyway, so it would be easy.

The only thing I'm curious about is whether it will be "my thing" - I
get the impression it's more along the lines of the Web and Macs rather
than UNIX (which is generally more characteristic of DFEY (except for
Ste...)). Is this correct?

Thanks,

Yeah, 19 is fine.

This is, to some extent true. It's actually *data* that's the centrepiece, and  the Internet tends to be the most famous tool for data, but there's more, like visulisations, desktop apps, hardware ahcks with arduino - whatever you can think of with public sector data sets...

Could we try an populate this wikipage of who is going, who is intersted
in going, who needs help with transport/accomodation, who is local etc.

Feel free to ask questions, or improve the page as you see fit :)

Cheers,
