I've seen a few clips on YouTube, and I was wondering why Phillip III got tested for Huntington's Disease, and how his getting tested was supposed to benefit Chance. The dialogue made the situation sound extremely unrealistic.

First of all, if anyone was worried about Chance developing Huntington's Disease, all they had to do was to test Chance! In general, for ANY genetic disorder, the individual's DNA has all the information the lab technicians can interpret, and possibly more. Tests can distinguish whether someone has one defective allele or two. There is absolutely nothing further that can be learned by examining the parents' DNA.

Second, the basis of Huntington's Disease is the number of repeats in the polyglutamine region of the huntingtin gene, and this number can increase from one generation to the next, so that the parent doesn't have a defective allele but the child does. Therefore, it is particularly uninformative to test parents in the case of this disorder. If the tests showed that Phillip III and Nina each had 27 or fewer repeats (which is normal) in both copies of the huntingtin gene, it would be very unlikely that Chance could have a copy with 40 or more repeats. However, if either parent had 28-35 repeats in one or both copies, they would be considered safe from the disease themselves, but at risk of producing defective sperm or eggs with more repeats, so Chance would have to get tested.

Third, if genetic terminology is used correctly, there is no such thing as a ''carrier'' for Huntington's Disease. It is a dominant genetic trait, so one defective copy of the gene is enough to cause symptoms. Phillip III is about halfway through the decade in which symptoms typically appear. When his test showed that he didn't have a defective huntingtin allele, he should have felt relieved for his own health in the immediate future!

Fourth, how did the issue of Huntington's Disease come up? Does someone related to Chance have it?

Well first of all when we first heard about Huntington's disease when Nina was telling Jill and Kay that Chance was experiencing some Huntington symptoms while in Iraq fighting the war.  I don't know if anyone tested Chance while he was over in the war??  All I know is Nina said Phillip III needed to get tested so he did, but before any of that could happen Cane had do redo his DNA test to make sure he was the real Phillip III... come to find out the DNA test was a fake it wasn't Cane's blood it was really the real Phillip's blood because the blood that was tested was frozen... and that is when everyone found out that Cane was a Con Artist.  That's when the real Phillip Chancellor III came back shocking everyone and with them all having questions about why he left??  Then Phillip IV (Chance) came back home after leaving the war surprising the whole family... he was also surprised by seeing his father for the very first time and knowing that he was still alive.  Phillip III had already got tested for Huntington and was waiting to hear back from the doctor then the phone rang it was the doctor and that is when Phillip didn't have it, so Chance doesn't have it either.  I guess all I really can say is it is a soap opera.

Thanks for the update from BA's question about Huntington's disease.  I was curious about that myself.  We can certainly relate with both my son and you having genetic defects of a neurological disease.

I am so far behind in the episodes, that I need to come back and watch the "Chance Scenes" you have posted.  I have been busy with my ill cat, Zelda.  She may have cancer and with us only a short while longer.  However, she has been drinking and eating with gusto today.  However, she is only able to breathe shallow fast breaths, because there is a mass or fluid in her chest cavity that is preventing full expansion of her lungs ... which right now are only one half of their capacity.

I am glad to hear you are doing much better and are much stronger, because of your in-the-pool PT.

You are welcome!!  Yes you can say that again.

I am sorry about you cat Zelda I hope she doesn't have cancer.  That's good that she is eating and drinking its a really good sign.  That is so sad... can't they operate and remove the mass??

Yes I am glad that I am getting much stronger I am so ready to get out of this bed that I have to stay in 24-7 I am so ready to be able to get around without any help

Zelda would have to have a ultrasound of her chest cavity, to see if they can get more information on what is blocking her lungs to fully inflate.  That cost would be $500 to $1,000 alone.  Chemotherapy runs in the range of $1,000 to $3,000.  Zelda is 17 1/2 years old or 88 years old in human terms.  The Vet doubts in her advanced age, that she would survive an operation, or if it is Cancer, chemotherapy.  Right now, I hope I can keep her as comfortable as possible.  She had a steroid shot earlier this week, but can't have another for two weeks.  She has almost lost 1/3 of her weight already, so she doesn't have a lot of strength.

I am sure you would like to move around on your own.  Keep up your PT in the pool, and you will get there!

Dog gone that sure is a lot of money.  Zelda sure is old... I never had a cat that lived that long.  That is so sad that the Vet doesn't think he can help her.  Yes am sure thats all you can do for her keep her as comfortable as possible.  You are very lucky that you have had her 17 1/2 years.

Yes you are right I really can't wait.  Yeah I will do my best.

Yes, she is old ... I have had her since 1992.  The Vet can help her keep comfortable, but it is doubtful, she can do anything to help Zelda's longevity.  She has had a full life and has been a great companion to have sleep with you, etc.  Yes, I am.

Great ... glad you will keep working on your PT.  I hope you start again soon.

You have had her for a very long time.  Well that is really good that the Vet will be able keep her comfortable... I sorry there is nothing that can be done to save her life.  That sounds like she is a very loving wonderful cat and a great companion!!

Yeah I will as soon as they ok.

Yep, that she is.  Hasn't been eating much today and spends most of her time hiding ... so we leave her alone.  Cats are like that according to the Vet.

That sounds about right... maybe she is just not that hungry.

I was approved for 4 to 8 weeks of PT, yesterday though my foot doctor came to my house and took off half of the nail on by big toe (bad hang nail).  I will start back at PT as soon as my toe is healed.

Zelda is not eating on her own at all for two days.  We forced fed her some baby food this evening.  At least she kept that down ... the previous 4 times she had eaten, she vomited it all up.   When a small animal doesn't eat, they continue to lose weight and muscle mass.  I may have to put her down soon.

Congrats! on the additional approval for PT.   Sorry, you lost half your toenail on your big toe.  At least you don't have a hang nail anymore!

That's awful... its good that she was able to hold down some baby food... thats really bad that she vomited 4 time, poor Zelda.  Yeah that makes complete sense.  I know you will have to do what you think is best for her.

Thanks a lot I'm happy about too, but I can't start back until my toenail is all the way healed.  Hey its ok that I lost half of the toenail was the only way to get reed of the hang nail and I would have done just about anything to get reed of that painful hang nail.
