We used to see exactly this problem when running 5.x -- we upgraded to
6.x and the problem went away, so we always assumed it was an issue
between a certain version of the JVM and ELJ...

It could be an incompatibility with Java 6? I haven't really seen
symptoms like that before but 5.0.8 is really quite ancient (it's at
least 4 years old). The first step to any solution is going to be
upgrading so I'd give that a shot. If you have a current maintenance
subscription the upgrade is free - you'll just need to log a support
request to get an updated license key.
