As per below discussion below with a user, it seems in Windows if
you select items "first item first" in an "open file" box, the last
selected file will be added to the front of the list in the text box, so
in many programs (including Audacity 1.3.6), the last selected file
will be opened first. This is an irritation when opening files as a list
as we do. 1.2.6 still managed to import the files in correct order
by disrespecting the actual left to right order in the box.
Should we go back to this behaviour in 1.3.6? If so, obviously not a
priority. Apologies if this is already known.

OK I can see it now. With last item at the bottom, if you SHIFT-select
downwards and look at the list of files in the "File name" box, the
newly added file is being added to the front (left of the list), then sorted
to the end when the next file is selected. For this reason, if you select
upwards (last item first), you'll get the files imported in correct order.
This is I think a Windows bug, and you will find the same ordering
in the file name box in any application you look at. Many programs
will fail to open files in the correct order if selected "first item
first".
The kludge that made files display in correct order in 1.2.6 could
itself be viewed a bug, as it means the order in the file box won't
be respected; in 1.3.5 if you selected downwards but then renumbered
the files inside the box from left to right, that order would be honoured.
I agree you might find 1.2.6 behaviour the lesser of two evils, but
we'd have to discuss if we wanted to fix it (and if so, it would not be
a priority). So I'd suggest the easy workaround may be to remember
to select the last item first for now (counter-intuitive as it is).
