Hi

Has any one had any problems using the 13.7beta
with Windows7 and if so how have you over come them?

I have been using the beta version for about 8
weeks since I first installed W7 I use Audacity on
a daily basis.  On Wednesday night Audacity
decided it no longer wanted to work with W7.  I
tried to open it, I got an icon in my task bar but
when I got to us it the graphic shows a very
unhappy Audacity and nothing happens.

In the end I had to un-install the beta version
and install 1.26 final version.

We tested Windows 7 a few months ago and it seemed to work as well as
Vista with Audacity, and apparently it worked fine for you too for a couple of
months. However Windows 7 is a Beta operating system, and it is not
yet officially supported by us.

Can you give us a more useful description of what happened with 1.3.7
and how it looked visually?

I would strongly suggest resetting your 1.3 Preferences to default values
as described here:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Audacity_Preferences#Audacity_1.3_.28Beta.29

In other words,

   1.  Exit Audacity
   2. Open audacity.cfg in a text editor such as Notepad and remove all the content except the line "NewPrefsInitialized=1"
   3. Save the changes to audacity.cfg and restart Audacity

Sometimes when I select a portion (or all) of a recorded stereo
track, instead of showing a solid gray the selected area shows shaded
bars at the top and bottom of each channel. It doesn't appear to have
any effect, but it bothers me that I don't know what I'm doing to
cause it, or what it's for, or how to get rid of it.

Sorry about that - I was just editing that post on Nabble so it looked a
bit better online - it should not have sent it to the mailing list at all,
and certainly not like that with the code in it. I'll report it to them if
it happens again.

Please always state what version of Audacity you are using.

Is your problem this, which is a bug in 1.2:
http://n2.nabble.com/random-dotted-line--td283458.html#a283459

or are you using the Zoom Tool (F4) when you drag (applies to both
1.2. and 1.3)?

If you want to keep the ability to zoom by clicking while still dragging
selection regions, try MultiTool (F6).

I'm using Audacity 1.36 (not 1.37) on Windows 7 without issue.
Actually, it runs better on Windows 7 than it ever did on Vista or XP,
but that's just me.

I just installed Windows 7 and I am trying to use Audacity 1.3.9. I have a creative sound blaster X-fi Xtreme Audio card. Whenever I try to record the program wont do it, the bar that goes across just stays at 0 flashing until I stop the recording. Sometimes I get an error of..."Latency Correction setting has caused the recorded audio to be hidden before zero. Audacity has brought it back to start at zero. You may have to use the time shift tool to bring the track to the right place." I tried what this guy said from audacity forum but that didn't work for me. I have played around with my preferences->devices in audacity and in the windows control panel for sound, but I can't make it work. Any ideas? Thanks

I ran AudacityBeta1.3.9 happily in Vista and in Linux, on a HP530 laptop (Conexant High Definition sound card).  When I installed Windows7 on the same machine, Audacity had an initial hiccup, then ran fine for 2 weeks, then would not run at all (gives screen display and notice "Program has developed error:  Windows is searching for a solution" - then closes).

When I uninstalled Aud1.3.9, and then reinstalled it, the whole process seems to have started again, complete with initial hiccup.  I am enjoying the "honeymoon" 2-weeks while it lasts.  Any suggestions?

(Since I did not change the Preferences after Day1, it seems unlikely that resetting them would cure the problem?  ... I didn't see Gale's post in time to try it.)

Uninstalling and re-installing Audacity would not change the preferences
stored in the Beta .cfg file. However if you have ever had a 1.2 version
of Audacity, 1.3 will take preferences common to both versions from the
1.2 settings in the Windows Registry. If that's the case, resetting the
1.3 preferences would at least restore them to the 1.3 factory settings.
Instructions to reset the .cfg file are here:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Audacity_Preferences#reset_beta

All that said, the problem is more likely to be down to the drivers of
that Conexant sound device. Have you made sure that has up-to-date
drivers specifically intended for your particular computer model and
for Windows 7, as provided by the motherboard or sound device
manufacturer?
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Updating_Sound_Device_Drivers

If this is 64-bit Windows 7, you must obtain 64-bit sound device drivers:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=general&i=64-bit

In either case, if Windows 7 drivers aren't available, ones for Vista
might work OK.

Can you describe what exactly happens with the "hiccup"? Are there any
error messages, if so what do they say? If this crash occurs opening
Preferences, it's because you have no recording and/or playback
devices enabled and connected. This type of crash will be fixed in the
next 2.0 Release. Meantime you can go the system mixer:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#cp

to make sure that you have enabled and connected the devices you
want to use (refer to the Vista illustration on the above page as the
Windows 7 system mixer is nearly identical).

And are you running Linux and Windows 7 on a dual boot system,
choosing between them when you start the computer?

Done.  For results see below.

All that said, the problem is more likely to be down to the drivers of
that Conexant sound device. Have you made sure that has up-to-date
drivers specifically intended for your particular computer model and
for Windows 7, as provided by the motherboard or sound device
manufacturer?
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Updating_Sound_Device_Drivers

Done (by using ControlPanel, Sound, ManageSoundDevices, Recording, Driver, Update).  Result = gets Conexant (mfr) driver dated March 2007!  (My previous driver was Microsoft July 2009.)  WIll try it - for result see below.  Can't see anything on Conexant site offering ANY drivers for sound cards (they're mainly into modems and TV) for any version of Windows.

Can you describe what exactly happens with the "hiccup"? Are there any
error messages, if so what do they say? If this crash occurs opening
Preferences, it's because you have no recording and/or playback
devices enabled and connected. This type of crash will be fixed in the
next 2.0 Release. Meantime you can go the system mixer:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#cp

"hiccup" is sudden "Error selecting input device - check .... settings", usually when pressing the Record button, even in middle of session.  Today it occurred on pressing Shift-Record during a session (to add to the recording I was making).  I click the dialog box OK, it disappears and all is well (without need to visit Preferences, which are already set properly).

Other hiccup is similar to the known bug - when I select "Preferences" the "Error selecting input device..." message appears - but even when input/output devices are ALREADY correctly selected.  This usually exits from Audacity, but not always (?)

And are you running Linux and Windows 7 on a dual boot system,
choosing between them when you start the computer?

Yes.  GRUB in the MBR, and Windows7 and DebianLinux on separate partitions - with one VFAT file storage partition available to both, which is where the music files are.

*** RESULTS *** of resetting audacity.cfg to single-line, and installing Conexant old drivers as above, and setting all volume controls to max via the sndvol32 loudspeaker icon:

- no glitches at all when accessing Preferences (so far)!
- no crashes at all, so far!
- chaos over selecting IP and OP devices:

(a) I set Audacity/Preferences/Host=MME and PlaybackDevice=SpeakersUSBAudio,
and I set ControlPanel/ManageAudioDevices/Playback=SpeakersUSBAudio.
A previously downloaded track played back through the laptop speakers, but another track recorded earlier today (via the USB sound card) played back correctly via the USB sound card to the hifi - without me changing any settings between playing the two tracks!

After several more attempts to set Preferences, all tracks finally played through the USBAudio output.

(b) I set Audacity/Preferences/Host=MME and RecordDevice=lineUSBAudio,
and I set ControlPanel/ManageAudioDevices/Recording=lineUSBAudio.  Although the ControlPanel display showed the USB input music signals activating the level indicator of "lineUSBAudio", Audacity recorded nothing (or sometimes a high-pitched bleeping sound).

(c) I set Audacity/Preferences/Host=MME and RecordDevice=MicrophoneUSBAudio,
and I set ControlPanel/ManageAudioDevices/Recording=MicrophoneUSBAudio, or LineUSBAudio.  Audacity recorded nothing in either case (sometimes a high-pitched bleeping sound).

(d) I set Audacity/Preferences/Host=MME and RecordDevice=MicrosoftSoundmapperInput,
and I set ControlPanel/ManageAudioDevices/Recording=lineUSBAudio.  Audacity records fine!!
(But if I set ControlPanel/ManageAudioDevices/Recording=MicrosoftSoundmapperInput, it records silence)

Using the hint you gave to see all available devices in ControlPanel (rclick any device on ManageAudioDevices Recording tab, check "ShowDisconnectedDevices" and "ShowUnavailableDevices") I found another device "WaveOutMix" ... I didn't try this.

Gale, you seem to have solved my problem, at least for now, so many thanks.  I hope the above helps you sort out some of the problems with Windows 7.

Thanks. Now you mention it, I've seen it mentioned before on Vista and 7
that it's sometimes necessary with USB devices to choose Microsoft Sound
Mapper in Audacity, with the system set to the input you want, whereas
choosing the input device explicitly in Audacity doesn't work.
