For all those familiar with em dashes (i.e. these: —), quotation dashes (i.e. these ―) and whatever other kinds of dashes, I have a question. But first, let me explain what I know certain dashes are for:

Em dashes (u+2014): parenthetical phrases; used in place of a colon; used to express that a speaker has been interrupted; for aposiopesis
En dashes (u+2013): used for ranges of numbers; used for contrasting values or showing relationships; compound adjectives; some of the same situations as em dashes
Figure dashes (u+2012): the dash used in telephone numbers
Quotation dashes (u+2015): introducing lines of quoted text

QUESTION:
What is the proper kind of dash to use when signing your name to something (such as a letter)?
e.g.
—Name
―Name
etc.

I know they look the same in some fonts, but not all (and if you do a search for the character, it will find the one you search for and not the other, even if they both look the same). I believe quotation dashes are slightly longer than em dashes.

There are different kinds of dashes.

When someone writes a letter, or sometimes when someone is quoted, they will end with a dash, followed by the person's name. The question is, What kind of dash are you supposed to use, ideally?—since there are many dashes.

There are at least the following dashes: en dashes (–), em dashes (—), quotation dashes (―), figure dashes (‒), hyphens (-), etc.

Anyway, I suspect an em dash would work in the absence of a quotation dash (which might be ideal). The smaller dashes appear to be too small to be what I'm asking about. Can anyone verify or deny this?

Here's an example of where this would be used:

Dear someone or other,

Paragraphs of text here …

—Me

(I used an em dash there.)

Anyway, I hope this clarifies things at least a little. If it doesn't, could you let me know more specifically what it is that doesn't make sense? Thanks!

I'm not really sure which is proper but I've always just used the em dash, I prefer the longer one before my name. I know en dashes are used for separating numbers like 6-10 it's used to show duration, and em dashes are used for pauses in thought or in place of a colon or parenthesis.

Seeing as you skip the farewell at the end which would have a comma after it I would have to say the em dash is correct since it can be used in place of the comma. (According to Google anyway.) I didn't know you could use it in place of a comma but that's what I found, so hey learned something new today. As always just my thoughts hope they help. D.

Cool. Nice insights.

I am wondering, though, does anyone know enough about quotation dashes to rule them out as a candidate?
