I'm taking an Art History courses this next semester.
ARTH 387
Recently emerging art practices (based on artificial life, biological
processes, genetic research and biotechnologies, as well as on the
melding of biology and artificial systems) address important
aesthetic, theoretical, cultural and ethical issues. Where artificial
life artworks generally simulate human or animal behaviour and other
natural processes, bio- (tech) art can employ traditional or new media
or consist of "living" matter. Through the employment of "wet"
biotechnologies, artists create clones and grow tissue culture, as
well as genetically manipulate plants, bacteria, cells, and animals.
Such "live" art, quite ostensibly, transcends the realm of traditional
media, eradicating the separation between art and life. Even more
significant, these diverse bio- and a-life artworks trigger important
debates about the role of art, science and bio-technology in our
post-modern society.
In this course, we will engage in some of these debates by considering
the problematics raised by a variety of challenging artworks in this
emerging field. At the same time, we will situate this art practice
in an (art) historical and theoretical framework. One of the avenues
we will explore is an examination of the role as deterministic and
reductive or can their art practices also deal with aesthetic
concerns? Our study will evaluate how art, science and technology
challenge traditional conceptions of "life," of nature, of animal and
plant species, even what it means to be "human." Students will have
the opportunity to discover the astounding intersections, today,
between art, science and technology and to reflect on the
controversial questions and debates they trigger.
Was moderately annoying to get permission for it...
