I am editing a short track then exporting  it as a wav file. The resulting file saved will only play in its edited form in Audacity. If I attempt to play it in Itunes or burn a CD the track returns to its original form.  The edits I'm making are simple cut and pastes followed by Export as wav. My understanding is that should give a new file ready to play as is.

What am I doing wrong?

Seems you are either playing the original file in iTunes or you still have the unedited track in Audacity and are exporting that selection by mistake?  See our FAQs and Tutorials (link on the left):

Thanks for the response Audacity,

I had a look at your Tutorial and FAQ info, and, as far as I can tell, I'm following instructions accurately. Here's what I do: Go Project/Import Audio/ then cut/paste/fadeout (as example). I next go File/Export as AIFF. The resulting AIFF file will play as saved in Audacity but not in iTunes, or be able to be burned to CD in its edited form. It seems I'm not really saving my edit.

So, am I missing a crucial step?  Should I be opening a new track when I import audio? Please explain, or direct me to the relevant info.

Does not make much sense. What OS are you on - example MAC OS X 10.4, Windows Vista etc, and what version of Audacity (see Help > About or Audacity > About).

Open Audacity afresh and do Generate > Tone to produce a 30 second tone. Select 5 seconds of the audio in the middle and Edit > Trim then Export as WAV. Pay close attention to the location of the file and name it something you will know what it is. Now import it back into Audacity and you should see the five seconds of audio at the start of the track. If that works then try playing that same file you imported in iTunes.

Also are you are naming the edited file the same as the original unedited one and then dragging the edited one into iTunes when you already have it in the iTunes window? I have not tried it, but this might cause a problem with caching or similar. You would have to give step by step what you precisely you are doing so we could test it out. Thanks
