I was TAD in Norfolk this week so I used the opportunity to go by the Nassau and meet with the Public Affairs Chief. I was expecting a short visit but it turned into several hours. To begin with I was given two bells and a "Plank Owner Arriving" over the 1MC. After that I was escorted to the C.O.'s cabin and had the chance to explain exactly what we are trying to accomplish here. The C.O. (Captain Boorujy) stated that he was going to be transferring in the next few months but he would make sure his relief is well aware of what we are doing so they can offer all the support possible. As far as our visiting the ship is concerned, the Nassau is not scheduled to deploy in 2009 and has no major commitments as of yet so he felt confident that the ship could be in port for any visits we may want to do. As soon as we can nail down a firm date for a reunion they can begin to work on supporting us. I got to spend an hour or so going all over the ship and I can say, with all honesty, that the ship looks better now than at any time I was onboard and that includes Commissioning day. The entire ship, inside and out looked awesome and we all know how old she is. Initially she was slated for decommissioning in the next few years but the C.O. told me that has been extended out until 2024 so there is a good chance that the Nassau may out live all of us. As long as they continue to take care of here I don't doubt she will make it to that date too.
I was able to take a few photo's, I am sure Andy will find a place for them on the web site.
