We are writing to invite you to participate in a research study of using Second Life (SL) in library and information environments in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. If you are a librarian or information professional from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia please contact us. Your effort and contribution will make a difference in our project and to the library and information professions. We are researchers from the School of Library and Information Science of the University of South Carolina, and we are investigating the use of Second Life (SL) in library and information environments (e.g., libraries, museums, archives and other information organizations). The intent of this research is to examine how SL projects are planned, administered, and supported in such environments. The Co-Primary Investigators (CO-PIs) are Drs. Feili Tu and Ron Brown. The data collection involves surveying information professionals who are currently using SL world. The participants will be asked to fill in a web-based survey questionnaire anonymously on the Internet and submit it online. The questionnaire is designed for ease of response and will take little of your time. The researchers will send each participant a report of the findings. We would be deeply appreciative if you would participate in this study and we look forward to hearing from you. Please contact Dr. Feili Tu at feilitu@... or Dr. Ron Brown at RONBROWN@... to participate. Again, your contributions will make a difference to our study and our profession. Thank you. Dr. Kalman J. Kaplan, Director of the Program for Religion, Spirituality and Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine has long espoused a paradigm shift involving the replacement of Greek master stories in psychotherapy with a more positive approach based on biblical stories. Dr. Kaplan and his colleague, Elizabeth Jones, teach an online course on "A Biblical Approach to Mental Health" at UIC (see "http://www.rsmh.org") for health care professionals and counselors. Dr. Kaplan will bring this discussion to the Second Life community on Thursday, December 4, 2008 with a symposium entitled "Therapy versus Tragedy." A brief presentation (slides and voice) will be followed by discussion of the topics presented with participants using text chat. This activity is intended for those who are involved in counseling or healthcare and might include psychologists, counselors, hospice workers, nurses, social workers, and chaplains as well as students and other care givers but all interested avatars are welcome to register. It would be especially interesting to have some of you who are currently engaged in SL counseling activities to join the discussion. Participation in the symposium will be limited to the first ten individuals to register. There is no fee to register, just send an email to <mailto:symposium@...>symposium@... with your real name, role, institution, email address, and your avatar's name so that you can be provided with access to Thursday's symposium. Hope to see you on Thursday. *********************************************************** Gerald R. Message-ID: <465684.56897.qm@...> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello, from the Asian Front, Global Educators, I'm a classroom facilitator of learning and facilitator trainer from Canada who has worked in an EFL contexts for the past 14 years (Korea, the UAE, Mexico, China, Malaysia, and now find myself in Vietnam). I haven't gone much beyond fiddling with my avatar for a few precious minutes so, don't know much about the SL environment. Initial impressions (perhaps shared by most newbies like myself) are that it looks very complicated and time consuming. I haven't ventured into anything that has the word cost associated with it (like many dedicated and truly committed to the field, and having spent most of my time in government sponsored posts, I've spent more than I've earned) but hope over time to see how it can be used in this context. I'm currently developing an English language training curriculum for a new school targeting the health-care industry. Students (initially Vietnamese and Chinese) will spend time in intensive English conversation training then move on to the formal industry specific studies and training. I've already subscribed to the health-care mailing list and look forward to getting some help there in terms of lexical resources and information on similar programs. An interesting footnote to the program I'm developing is that the curriculum will incorporate Phonemic Awareness and Phonics training for adults. Their is a dearth of information on the implementation of such an element in other programs so if anybody has any leads they would be most appreciated. The Approach I have developed over the years is called the PRIME Approach which stands for Practical, Relevant, Integrated, Meaningful, and Enriching ELA. It requires the student to input most of the subject content in the context of courses called PRIME Strategies: Learning Lexis and Using Language for Communication, PRIME Talk: Developing and Using English for Conversation, PRIME Projects, etc., - radically different from most standard ESL/EFL courses. Therefore, I am most interested in the SL application for the potential it has for students to interact in the environment. The distinct advantages I foresee is the detachment students may have in this interaction (like playing with puppets) and therefore the well known 'affective filter' may be further reduced, and the potential for creativity and spontaneity in the interaction. I may be way off the mark here being in the state of ignorance I am about the whole SL concept(s). Your reactions will help clarify I'm sure. One final thing, after signing up to the list I started to get messages from all kinds of people about all kinds of topics most of which are interesting but of little relevance to my particular interests. So he question is how do I do as the option that follows on my list options page says I can; i.e., "By selecting one or more topics, you can filter the traffic on the mailing list, so as to receive only a subset of the messages." Thanks if you have waded through this up to this point. Wishes for success to all, William Together in the mission to help the people of the world communicate and learn more effectively, William M. Would you ever consider a premium membership and, if so, what would make it a better value and more attractive. No matter where you are, look to the southwest at dusk for a very pretty sight (if you are blessed with clear skies). Do you know if anyone else at SC is in SL? My son is there and was surprised to see the school had any in-world presence at all. Subject: [SLED] The Use of Second Life World in Your Institution Dear Colleagues: Greetings! Thank you. Sincerely, Feili Tu, Ph.D. Ron Brown, Ph.D. _______________________________________________ Educators mailing list To unsubscribe https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Educators mailing list Educators@... https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators End of Educators Digest, Vol 915, Issue 1 ***************************************** _______________________________________________ Educators mailing list To unsubscribe https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators |
