Writer/director Nolan Lebovitz wrote the screenplay for “Tortured” based on his love of twisted thrillers like “The Usual Suspects” and “Reservoir Dogs."

Little did Lebovitz know actor Laurence Fishburne was looking for the kind of role Lebovitz wrote for his screenplay. It’s the kind of lucky break that can jump start a movie - and a career.

Fishburne ended up playing a key role in “Tortured,” out this week on DVD. The film stars Cole Hauser as an undercover FBI agent who must torture the accountant (Fishburne) of a mysterious drug lord.

Lebovitz and his brother, Adam, who produced the film, met Fishburne through their agent, their former professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The agent knew Fishburne, and once she passed the script to him he expressed interest in playing the accountant.

“There’s nothing better for you to hear,” Lebovitz says regarding an actor of Fishburne‘s caliber being interested in a young filmmaker‘s project. As soon as the actor signed on, getting other talent like Hauser and James Cromwell got easier.

Fishburne’s commanding presence isn’t called upon in "Tortured," forcing the hulking actor to communicate in a different fashion.

“You’re expecting him to be such a physically imposing actor that when he’s confined in this movie it’s unnerving,” he says.
