On the fifth anniversary of the end of the civil war in Bosnia, former hot-shot reporter Simon Hunt mysteriously shows up, five years after imploding on live television and disappearing into a self-imposed exile. Reunited with his cameraman, Duck, who has been promoted to a cushy studio gig working with anchorman Franklin Harris, Simon convinces Duck to go on a dangerous journey to get an interview with the wanted war criminal known as the Fox, based on the real-life Radovan Karadicz. They are joined by Ben, the Harvard-educated nephew of a network executive who is in search of adventure and a good story. Together the three drive deep into Serb territory, facing more intrigue and danger than they ever could have imagined.

The film is loosely based on Scott Anderson’s 2001 Esquire article about five American and European journalists who exposed the incompetence of the United Nations and NATO at tracking down secluded war criminal Radovan Karadzic — accused of ethnic cleansing in the 1990s Bosnian War — by finding him themselves.

Richard Shepard writes and directs with the same seriocomic verve he brought to “The Matador” (2005), which featured a hardened hitman (Pierce Brosnan) who befriends a goofy salesman (Greg Kinnear) and drags him along for an increasingly dangerous ride through his wild profession. In both films, Shepard finds time for social commentary as he unfurls dirty laughs and strident action sequences.

This time out, the audience entry point is green TV news producer Benjamin (Jesse Eisenberg), who latches onto an escapade led by surly, brandy-swilling veteran reporter Simon (Richard Gere) and grizzled cameraman Duck (Terrence Howard). The trio searches for a Karadzic-like figure known as the Fox, who has a $5 million bounty on his head.

Simon, a desperate washout who flushed away a network correspondent job by tells Duck he wants to interview the Fox, then later clarifies that by “interview” he meant “capture and possibly kill.” Any reasonable newsman would flee for the nearest embassy after hearing such a declaration, but there’s nothing reasonable about Duck, who cancels his plans to hang out with his girlfriend in Greece. Benjamin tags along, thinking he’s stumbled into an action movie, which he has.

The guys dodge bullets from a shotgun-wielding waiter, masquerade as a CIA hit squad, push their way into a backwoods dive bar that would make the villains in “Deliverance” turn up their noses, and are more than once captured by angry gunmen and brought to the brink of execution.

Shepard keeps the tone light and goofy, even in the most dire of circumstances. Characters exchanged barbed quips that drip with cynicism.

Gere has so much fun in his role it’s almost unfair that he was paid for his efforts, although the wily film is well worth your dollar.
