A small town Sheriff’s world is rocked when the investigation of a shocking murder entangles him in a conspiracy that may take his job and possibly his life.

When a local transsexual is found murdered, Sheriff Darl Hardwick is asked to keep the case quiet. After all, its election time and the Judge and Governor don’t need this kind of a scandal in the news. But when he discovers that the Judge is backing another man in the sheriff’s election, Darl begins to dig deeper, and soon finds himself immersed in a dark and sordid world of sex, money, blackmail and murder. To uncover the truth, Darl will have to risk everything. But sometimes the truth isn’t all that’s revealed.

Billy Bob Thornton going direct to video? Surely not?

As implausible as it sounds – considering the great lot of hits Thornton has churned out of late – his latest film, “The Badge” is indeed going to be showing nowhere but your lounge room idiot box.

So just what’s so wrong with Billy Bob’s latest movie that it skips the cinemas altogether and heads to black box province? Truth be told: Nothing.

“The Badge”, may be anomalous, it may unusual and it may be irresolute in parts, but it’s definitely a well-performed and captivating piece of film. If I had to guess why it’s bypassing the celluloid compound it’d be because it’s such a hard-sell with it’s “Monsters Ball” meets “Twin Peaks” meets “8mm” blend of drama.

Playing a character reminiscent of his in “The Man Who wasn’t there”, Thornton plays a perplexed, acquiescent Sheriff named Darl. Darl’s life is quite convoluted: his ex-wife (Sela Ward) barely has the time of day for him, his teenage daughter (Jena Malone) is so rapt up in her untamed troupe of friends she doesn’t care less about Daddy, and even his job is under threat by the outwardly fraudulent neighboring small town governor and his band of merry men.

While at an accident site where a truck has overturned, Darl’s officers discover a body lying nearby. They later identify the body as – oh my god! – A transsexual! In this part of the woods, there’s nothing worse. And that’s where Darl starts to pencil in some prime suspects. Thing is, how long is he going to have his badge before he is taken off the case?

Predictable though enchanting, “The Badge” is a good watch. Sure, it’s not the mighty Billy Bob Thornton feature you’d expect – but it’s still a peculiarly interesting flick.

Thornton gives a good performance as the distraught sheriff turned vigilante crime solver, whilst Patricia Arquette adds solid support as the baffling wife of the transsexual, determined to find out what happened to her loved one.

I don't know if this is what the forum is about but wanted to thank KLAXXON for another great quality video and comment on the movie.

Lots of good actors but this must have been one of those obligatory movies their contract calls for.
I'd give it a 4 out of 10.
