That old Dell question

Greetings. I've been on this list for ages, but I think this is my
first question. Info:

PC/Window XP

Problem: I'd like to use stereo-mix, to record presentations,
discussions etc. in Second Life.

Problem:  I unfortunately have a Dell, and can't get stereo mix
(because Dell designed it that way, I gather).

Are there any solutions, workarounds, hints, recommendations?

Dennis

Hi, Dennis

You can do such things with PulseAudio with one click of mouse
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio

You can simply move the sound stream where you want, with one click.
You can make Internet radio broadcasting directly from your notebook.

However, Pulse can produce a lot of noise if your Dell is not powerful enough.
You can try to run it offline and on battery, this may reduce noise.

The easiest way to get Pulse to your Windows box is wubi.exe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wubi_(installer)

Perhaps, similar solutions (sound server) exist for Windows too.

"Are there any solutions, workarounds, hints, recommendations?"
Why not try Ubuntu with Pulse?

Best,
Igor

The exact solution for Windows is TotalRecorder.

It is not free, but it is not expensive.
It is fantastic tool.
I used it on Windows many years ago

Sound recording tools: Total Recorder - captures any audio from ...
Total Recorder - Record audio being played by other sound players,
such as Real Player or Windows Media Player over the Internet.
www.totalrecorder.com/ - Cached - Similar

Sound recording tools: Total Recorder - captures any audio from ...
Total Recorder - universal sound recording program. Capture sound
being played by other sound players, either from a file or from the
Internet.
www.highcriteria.com/ - Cached - Similar

But the greatest tool is Google - it can answer any question

As I remember, the TotalRecorder installs a virtual sound card.
And you should then configure your Windows sound system so that
this virtual sound card is uses instead of real one.
You can do this from the tray.
Click on the speaker icon, then Advanced settings.

I do not know whether this tool is already forbidden because
of copyrights problem.

There might be several tools named TotalRecorder.
You should take the right one.

perhaps this (I do not know exactly)
Total Recorder Standard Edition 7.1 build 3440

Sometimes it is possible to turn stereo mix on by changing a "0"
to "1" in one of the driver .inf files.

Otherwise, exit Audacity, go to the system mixer:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#cp

and follow the instructions for XP to show hidden sources. Read the
panel "HELP WITH RECORDING COMPUTER PLAYBACK OR STREAMING
AUDIO", if showing hidden sources does not produce a source for
recording streaming audio.

As per that panel, we usually recommend Freecorder 3 if your inbuilt
device will not record computer playback. This works in your web
browser (usually where you want to record streaming audio from).

Total Recorder mentioned by Igor is certainly a solution, but not
free, not as I recall it very user-friendly, and its virtual drivers
never worked with Audacity in the past. This created problems if
people set their default system device to Total and then chose
"Microsoft Sound Mapper" as Audacity's recording device, therefore
mapping to Total.

Hi Gale!

Total recorder was quite friendly to me, but I had to read the manual.
You do not need Audacity with Total recorder, it can do the work a great exactitude.
It is a kind of "stream ripper".
The problems with copyrights therefore...

Best,
Igor
