This makes sense. If I want to try the classes again, I'll go about it the traditional way. The constructor window just saves a lot of time at the beginning of the process.

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

Hi Scacinto,

I have experienced similar problems in the past. The thing you
describe happens when a faulty Pen function is used in a UserView.
Instead of producing an error in the post window it gets sc in a
strange state where all graphics are messed up. It is a nasty bug that
is not very programmer-friendly; I wish it would just produce error
messages..

I can imagine that the Round/Smooth classes have these kind of
problems in the constructor window, because I never tested them with
it. I also don't know that the constructor window does with views
internally (honestly I've never used it..), and I am surprised they do
show up in there. Certainly RoundView should not be there, as it is an
abstract class. I have no time to investigate now, but hope that
clears up something. Do you have the problems also with other (non-
round/smooth) views?

cheers,
Wouter

Op 9 feb 2010, om 14:49 heeft scacinto het volgende geschreven:

>
> I can also confirm that hangs also occur when working with the
> construction
> gui window on a different machine, a ppc machine with a different
> OS. These
> are different than the crashes on my Macbook Pro. The PPC machine and
> earlier build simply hang after attempting to run code generated
> using the
> Constructor window, esp. code that involves the round/smooth
> classes. What
> happens is that the gui pops up as expected, but the buttons do not
> appear.
> At this point all seems well, but the mouse pointer goes into "text
> entry"
> mode and never returns, the gui window is responsive, but all other
> windows
> in SC are not. files can be saved, but the program gui is messed up
> such
> that you can't really see what you're doing. The program will not
> crash
> however; it will continue to run half-operational.
>
> Has anyone else had these problems?
>

I can also confirm that hangs also occur when working with the construction gui window on a different machine, a ppc machine with a different OS. These are different than the crashes on my Macbook Pro. The PPC machine and earlier build simply hang after attempting to run code generated using the Constructor window, esp. code that involves the round/smooth classes. What happens is that the gui pops up as expected, but the buttons do not appear. At this point all seems well, but the mouse pointer goes into "text entry" mode and never returns, the gui window is responsive, but all other windows in SC are not. files can be saved, but the program gui is messed up such that you can't really see what you're doing. The program will not crash however; it will continue to run half-operational.

Has anyone else had these problems?

> hi, we were discussing tonality diamonds (most associated with harry
> partch) at the sc meeting last night. i'd never heard of them before.
> as it was mentioned that jmc had posted some example code to
> illustrate this concept, i tracked it down and posted it to the wiki
> page for our meeting, so it can be easily found: http://
>>> Dear list,
>>>
>>> we tried different approaches/Quarks to synchronize 4 laptops playing
>>> patterns but nothing really worked. We need our "1" synchronized, and it
>>> would be cool if one person could change the tempo, but it would be
>>> sufficient to just syncrhonize to a common known tempo.
>>>
>>> TelepathicClock had some glitches, the tempo always tends to get slower and
>>> sometimes it get's really fast and crashed our system. We could not
>>> reproduce the glitches so it wasn't really usefull.
>>>
>>> We looked at OSCClock, but we couldn't really figure out how they wark or
>>> what to do.
>>>
>>> At the moment we sycnrhonize by hand with the RedTapTempoGUI. It wokrs, but
>>> it's tedious.
>>>
>>> Is anyone running a simillar setup or has an idea how this could be done
>>> easily? Setting the tempo remotley with OSC is not a problem, but we
>>> couldn't figure out how to force a Clock to restart a messaure or to
>>> sycnhronize the position in the messaure (so our patterns are out of sync).
>>>
>>> We hope somebody has a tip for us.
>> (a.plotter.resolution = 4)
>> Editing is not the main purpose though.
>
> the same even with resolution = 100, I think due to UserView+SCPen
> combo doesn't like frequent updating/refreshing...

There are some fixes under way for SCUserView which should
significantly increase performance.

> I'm pretty sure emacs gets its tabbing behavior from the mode it's in.
> If you want to explicitly insert a tab, you can use C-q <TAB>. However,
> I've found that scel's handling of tabs is actually pretty kick ass,
> with only a couple of exceptions here and there!
>
> Also, selecting a region and pressing tab will indent everything in that
> region according to what's specified for the mode. There's probably a
> way to explicitly add a tab to the beginning of every line in a region,
> but I'm not sure.
>

But of course - move to the top of the region, beginning of line, Ctrl-space, move the the end of the region, beginning of the line, type M-x replace-rectangle, and select <tab> as what to replace it with - since your rectangle has zero width you are just inserting a rectangle on every line. This works anywhere in the line, which is great for repetitive code that is layed out in a uniform manner (ie. not yet refactored, or explicitly repeated for optimization reasons). there are also kill-rectangle and yank-rectangle which should be easy enough to figure out.
> to change it in ~/.emacs.

> To find the name of the font, I wrote a quick linuxy font browser. I just
> love that you can do this kind of crap so easily in sc :)

Shift-leftclick on the screen should let you pick a new font. With emacs23 this was changed from setting the font for all of emacs to a buffer by buffer setting.

With my scel extensions you can set font, font size, color, and decoration (overline, underline, box, strike, italic etc) for a region, or file, basis.

> - Tabbing - why can't I add tabs after the prescribed indent?
C-q <tab>

> Is there a way
> to apply tabbing to a whole region, not just one line at a time?

Just some fun things I was toying with today.

- I wasn't happy with the default font (I hate Courier!) and found out how to change it in ~/.emacs.

(set-default-font "terminus-iso8859-9-12")

To find the name of the font, I wrote a quick linuxy font browser. I just love that you can do this kind of crap so easily in sc :)

(
var f, x, l, w;

f = Pipe("xlsfonts | grep iso8859-9", "r");
if(f.isOpen) {
protect {
x = List.new;
while { (l = f.getLine).notNil } {
x.add(l);
};

w = Window("fonts", Rect(0, 25, Window.screenBounds.width, Window.screenBounds.height-25));
l = ListView(w, Rect(2, 2, w.bounds.width - 4, w.bounds.height - 4))
.items_(x)
.action_({ |view|
var cmd = "xfd -fn '%'".format(x[view.value]);
cmd.postln;
cmd.unixCmd;
});
w.front;
} { f.close };
} { "Pipe couldn't be opened.".postln }};
)

- After reducing the font size (for my 600px-high netbook monitor), I got more lines in emacs by:

(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist '(height . 40))
(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist '(width . 90))

- A question/suggestion - ~/.emacs enables skeleton pair insertion for ` and <, which is not really helpful for SC syntax. This is on puredyne - not sure if that's a typical default or something that scel sets.

- Tabbing - why can't I add tabs after the prescribed indent? Is there a way to apply tabbing to a whole region, not just one line at a time?

Thanks,
hjh

--
James Harkins /// dewdrop world

>

thanks for the feedback.

> I'm on intel mac, but I have some thoughts:
> - great job, imho much more clear, esp. due to grids, automatic scaling, specs, and let's say that - it looks great
> - cpu intensive - for occasional use it's ok, but in the last example from scd file, when I drag the slider I have 100% on both cores (2yr old MB)

ah ok. can you try and set the resolution to 4? (a.plotter.resolution = 4)
Editing is not the main purpose though.

> - MultiPlot class name collides with similar one in 'wslib' quark

ok, we'll change it.

> - editing: this interesting feature is quite buggy now - when dragging mouse with pressed button not every consecutive value is set, values are set not under the pointer. Your plotview bears a resemblance to MultiSliderView, and it should behave in similar way (in this aspect).

perhaps we should use a multislider view underneath the grid.

> - keys: without external keyboard this is unwieldy, as "+" needs holding shift key. It would be useful to have also horizontal zoom (with scrolling - but I suppose it's much more work).
>

yes, maybe someone can implement this later.

> I would opt for making a quark – the view intruduces some new features and has potential to be developed further.
>
> ak
>
>>
>> PlotWindow is easily extendible from with SC, gives level information and supports plots of up to three dimensions. It can be embedded in UserViews and supports specs for both axes.
>>
>> I have now called the plot methods plot2, as not to interfere with what exists under plot. But if it works fine, it would perhaps be a good idea to replace the old one.
>>
>> <PlotWindow.scd><PlotView.sc>

Just a warning so no-one gets any shocks: later this week I'm
intending to rearrange the svn trunk of supercollider a little, as
discussed in a recent sc-dev thread.
(eg the mac xcode stuff will move into a 'mac' folder). The various
build scripts will need updating to reflect the changes, but that
should happen pretty quickly.

>> Hi,
>>
>> the quark JITMIDIKtl (quick use of midi controllers for jitlib),
>> has been updated: better structure, a class for the PocketFader,
>> and a howTo file for writing classes for your own device.
>>
>>
>> best, adc
