This experience went far better than I had hoped. Finally, my students
noted, SL did not seem "empty." At this point in the term, they all
felt comfortable enough with SL to "venture out" into the social
scene.  I felt that Burning Life could be a safe choice given the lack
of running scripts, the presence of Rangers, and even my being
in-world to come by "just in case."

Kudos to Linden Lab for making BL09 a far less laggy experience for me
and my class than it was in 2008.

I've put a post with student photos at:

I wonder whether the Lindens could be persuaded to give educators that much space for a week and what they would do with it?

(1) An educational space would allow teachers to set up self-directed
learning modules, more than just promotional information about the
university.

(2) New teachers in SL would have the ability to showcase their work
-- might be just the thing to tip the scales in favour of a grant,
or for getting a department chair on board with a project.

(3) Without the risk of having to rez our display next to an exhibit
that might offend the P.I.S. (people in suits), we could use an event
like this to attract students to SL learning (guided tours, scavenger
hunts, treasure hunts).

(4) We could use the space to introduce other faculty to the kind of
work we do, convince them that we are not lunatics.  (orientation
sessions, information sessions, colloquia, performances).  If we did
this as a group, it would be much less work for everyone.

(5) A SL education fair  could be coordinated with a RL
conference(s), or other event(s).

(6) If it were a yearly event, like SL6B or SLCC, we would have a
whole year to plan.

(7) Add your point here...

Peter asked,

" I wonder whether the Lindens could be persuaded to give educators
that much space for a week and what they would do with it? "

They do! We had an inspiring week last year at SL Education Support Faire:

https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2009/01/10/second-life-education-support-faire-january-25th-30th-2009

Many groups had their own small builds:

http://iggyo.blogspot.com/2009/01/first-dispatch-second-life-education.html

Don't miss my pic of an AFK AJ Brooks on a Segway.

This could be the impetus for an event such as the one you envision on
the Playa.  I've not heard if the Lab plans a Faire for 2010. If so,
I'll be there to terrorize you all.

I had a great time at the SLed Support Faire, but I'm not sure it's
the same thing as Peter's idea, which (I believe)  is that the
educational community get together and put up displays about how/what
they teach in their own discipline.  Instead of having established
educational and commercial groups display ideas for teachers, this
would a collective building experience for all teachers, in a space
where there would be no fear of building next to something
inappropriate, and the intention would be to draw the general SL
public.

I just participated in the College Fair at International Schools
Island, and I always try to do these exhibits because it has a great
feel to it, because we learn from each other as we build, and because
it develops community.  An education fair would be particularly
useful for those who are new to SL.  Even if they hadn't established
their own program or course in SL, an exhibit would help them work
out ideas about teaching, publicize their school, and maybe even use
their work to support a grant application.

The biggest gain for our school in participating at college fairs is
that OSU students who are already in SL find our program.  It has
been hard to connect with them at a university of our size.  Plus, I
took pictures and sent them to the student newspaper, so there's
always a little free publicity.

Anyway, sorry for the long post.  Remember, if you're teaching a
course  in SL,  whether distance or as part of a traditional course,
or as a non-credit, it would be really nice of you to list it on the
SLed wiki.

Course.... in SL.... post on wiki.   http://bit.ly/1kvvl3

Happy Halloween everyone -- stay away from the leftover candy!!
