 From the producers of The Grudge and The Ring comes a terrifying new thriller guaranteed to send shivers down you spine...When New York newly weds Ben and Jane Shaw (Joshua Jackson and Rachel Taylor) travel to Japan for a photographic work assignment they believe their life is picture perfect, but a horrific car accident leaves a young girl dead and the couple traumatised and terrified. Shortly after the incident the Shaws start to see unexplained images and inexplicable deaths occurring to those closest to them. Haunted by a vengeful ghost the Shaws begin to uncover the reasons behind the sinister happenings and discover that the most terrifying images are the ones which are real. The emergence of J-horror – the genre that originated in Japan with films like RING and THE GRUDGE – has found favour in the West with a number of films getting an American make-over. The latest is SHUTTER, an adaptation of a Thai horror film. It deals with the phenomenon known as spirit photography. When newly married couple Ben, (JOSHUA JACKSON) and Jane, (RACHAEL TAYLOR), decide on a working honeymoon in Japan where Ben, a photographer, has been hired for a fashion shoot, their trip to Mount Fuji ends in disaster. When Ben’s work is ruined by a spirit in his photos, Jane becomes convinced that the girl they ran over is somehow trying to communicate with them. The original Japanese versions of both RING and THE GRUDGE gave me the creeps, and SHUTTER does too, but somehow there’s an internal logic in SHUTTER that appealed to me. Shot entirely in Japan by director Masayuki Ochiai the film has a strong female lead in the Australian actress RACHAEL TAYLOR, she’s very impressive, and JOSHUA JACKSON’s good too.
