Howard, you're actually using our Beta version of Audacity. The Beta has
many features not in the current (1.2.x) series, but because it's Beta it
has no inbuilt help and its documentation is unfinished. "Quick-Play
range" is briefly described here:
http://www.audacityteam.org/manual/index.php?title=TimelineNot yet mentioned there is that you can lock the Quick-Play Region
(or a normal selection region drawn in the waveform), so that only that
region will play (Edit > Play Region > Lock).
Feel free to browse around the manual online, or download the single
page version and install lt in the Audacity help browser as described
at:

If you click Edit > Preferences (Audacity > Preferences on a Mac) and
then the Keyboard tab, there is a list of default shortcuts. For instance, R
will start recording and Spacebar plays or stops. You can change the
shortcuts if you wish, as described at:
http://www.audacityteam.org/manual/index.php?title=Keyboard_PreferencesMany shortcuts are also discoverable by looking in the menus, where the
shortcut is listed opposite each command.
