Ship shots (can't type that let a lone say it) Pic # 06.  I think this is a pic of what the BT's called blowing tubes or stacks? The military purpose was to lay out a smoke screen.  However, I think it was also some kind of preventive maintence for the boilers as well. If there are any hole snipes logged in they could verify this.  Pic 14 looks pretty recent to me. The rocket laucher is missing (not sure what the actual name is). Also the forward guns/cannons are gone. 5" 54's? What do I know I was an Engineman. Sorta..

Ahoy maties,
I served on Nassau from 11/81 - 2/85 (EM3).  I sent a bunch of pics to the web-dude from my time on board.  Some pics of the equator crossing in the I-O (MARG '82) and pics of other ships taken (while at sea) and a series of pics of the IOWA first berthing at Norfolk.

I remember the 5" on the FWD PORT CORNER and on the AFT STBD CORNER (of course I could be wrong as to which side of the boat they were on but I"m possitive that we had 2)...as far as the missile launcher?   We had 2 PHALANX systems installed; 1 was above/behind the missile launcher and the other was on top of the Island.  (Portsmouth...'83?)

Almost right. There were three 5"/54 Mk 45 Mod 0 gun mounts. Two forward, one port and one starboard and one aft on the starboard quarter. The two Basic Point Defense (BPDMS) launchers were located port quarter aft and one forward and below the bridge....... but then my brain, along with the rest of me is 67 so I could be in err.

Try the MARG 1-82 page.

Pretty sure I have the permissions set so even snipes can access the page.

You're memory is still sharp Larry. The 5"/54s and BPDMS have been replaced by MK15 Phalanx CIWS (1 Aft Port quarter, 1 Forward Port quarter of the island just forward of the Flag Bridge) and MK 31 RAM GMWS (1 Aft Starboard quarter, 1 Forward Port quarter of the island and above the Main Bridge). There's nothing now where the forward gun mounts were. With her current armaments she's covered for air defense but totally incapable of providing NGFS for troop landings (Which I thought was one of her original selling points but ...).

Regards, Harry.
