Saliva Test - Low

Hello,

I got a Saliva test from Diagnos-Techs and the numbers came back as:

07:00 - 08:00 AM - <1  Depressed     13-24 nM

11:00 - Noon          <1 Depressed        5-10 nM

04:00 05:00 PM        1 Depressed        3-8 nM

11:00 - Midnight     <1 Depressed        1-4 nM

Cortisol Burden:        4                      23-42

I have seen some postings about these tests.  Are they reliable?  If so here is yet another test showing low levels.  I am going to bring it to my endo and see what she says.  I don't think the normal medical community agrees with this test, but it would be interesting to see!

Regards,

Randy.

Randy,

Saliva tests are extremely accurate.  There's no doubt that you have adrenal insufficiency.

Do you take DHEA?  Have you had your DHEA-S tested?  Testosterone?

Do you live in the US?

One of many journal abstracts about salivary hormone testing:

Ann Biol Clin (Paris). 2009 Sep-Oct;67(5):493-504.
[Current status of salivary hormone analysis]
[Article in French]

Gröschl M.

Department of Pediatrics, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erlangen, Germany.
Saliva, which offers a noninvasive and stress-free alternative to plasma and serum, is a widely accepted sample source for analysis of steroids and also of certain amines and peptides. In recent years, numerous publications have described the use of salivary hormone analysis in many fields of clinical and basic research. This review provides an overview of the current applications of salivary hormone analysis. A description of the different of hormone entry into saliva is followed by a detailed description of analytical methods and approaches for reliable collection of saliva, including several interesting applications in diverse fields including psychiatry, stress research, clinical endocrinology, sport medicine, and veterinary medicine. Although saliva has not yet become a mainstream sample source for hormone analysis, it has proven to be reliable and, in some cases, even superior to other body fluids. Nevertheless much effort will be required for this approach to receive acceptance over the long term, especially by clinicians. Such effort includes the development of specific and standardized analytical tools, the establishment of defined reference intervals, and implementation of round-robin trials. One major problem, the lack of compliance sometimes seen in outpatient saliva donors, requires strict standardization of both collection and analysis methods to achieve better comparability and assessment of published salivary hormone data.

Thanks Dusty.  Here are some answers:

Do you take DHEA?  No.

Have you had your DHEA-S tested?  Not recently enough.

Testosterone? No

Do you live in the US? Yes

Once I have my endo followup on the current testing, I will ask her about these tests.

Hi Joel,

I was on 15mg for about a month preparing for the testing.  It wasn't fun.  I stopped taking any about 15hrs prior to the test.

Glad you're going to get those tested.  WIth the testosterone you need:  Total serum testo, Free testosterone, and % free.

Most likely you need to supplement DHEA since you've been on steroids for so long.

I'm so excited for you to get these tests done and, most likely, replace hormones (DHEA, testo and florinef)  you've been missing for years.  You're going to be a new man!

Randy,

I agree with Dusty, get your testosterone and DHEA-S levels checked.
I am not sure how you have been feeling on 25mg HC, but you might feel a lot better with the Florinef and DHEA.
