RUSTY MINIVAN by Austin Franke

V1
fireflies in the night sky
homemade apple pie
the kids are riding their bikes
the sun is running away with the light
the moon is on its way
to bring the stars and play
the kids say goodbye to today
as they await a school day

Chorus
now they're off to college
to fill their heads with knowledge
no more pink bandages
to cover up any damages
mom and dad are empty
like the beer cans
in the rusty minivan

V2
the trees are cold
the bikes are under snow
the tire swing is frozen
the years have been golden
the kids are grown up
drinking wine from paper cups
they have no time for love
just overnight hookups

Chorus
They are off to college
to fill their heads with knowledge
no more pink bandages
to cover up any damages
mom and dad are empty
the the beer cans
in the rusty minivan

Wow . . . no time for love . . .
It's sad to see people get so busy, but it does seem that it might be happening to many.

Education is important and all - but a career is not life itself (or, it shouldn't be, at least - I think).

It seems that the poem indicates people, as they grow old, are spending their time on worldly things, and cheap imitations of what could be lasting pleasures, instead of what really matters.  I mean, they try to fit the important things in the schedule of the less important things.  Priorities.  Yeah - such is an issue of our day . . . not only with education, but with many other aspects of life, it seems.  It seems to indicate that life was different as a child.  Kids know what's up, apparently - well, they know what's important, at least (or they're innocent of what's not important, anyway, in many regards).

Drinking wine from paper cups seems symbolic because wine seems a little extravagant for paper cups.
It's like they're getting at the riches, but they're doing it at the sacrifice of other things - I might have switched the symbols around, though: I mean, have some cheap substance in a fancy glass, as the drinking of the wine is what seems to be the more important thing (without taking into account what it probably means, at least).  Actually, with the symbols how they are, that makes more sense, if you do not value wine yourself (I personally don't value it).

I like how it glamorizes youth - I think that is definitely appropriate for this song, if I'm understanding it correctly.

Note the typo the second time the chorus comes around:
> the the beer cans

I don't understand the latter part of the chorus, about mom and dad being empty. I mean, I don't know what that means, yet.

The sun running away and the moon coming is cool.  Nice lead-in to what comes next (although it's not directly associated in the song, it seems).

What's the genre for the music you have, will have or want to have, with this?  Is it the same tune for both verses?  Have you got it worked out how the lyrics fit?  I know it's often hard to apply specific meters with contemporary music, as is done with hymns.

P.S. Someone rated you low - it might be because of the alcohol references, deeming it as objectional content; if this is the case, perhaps they wouldn't have done it if you noted that at the beginning of your post (you can always edit it and mention that, if you prefer).  I don't know, maybe they just didn't like it, or something: who knows?  I thought the message I got out of the song was cool, myself (though I am against drinking and all, but it doesn't seem that the song is in particular favor of it, either; I suppose I could have misinterpreted it, though).

wow you read my intentions like an open book!  with the wine in paper cups...i was trying to demonstrate that in college everything is drank from paper cups b/c they cant afford glasses.  the wine part simply added a sense of college kids wanting to feel grown up/treated as adults.  i, myself like wine and am in college...i have even drank wine from a paper cup before...actually it was a plastic solo cup but the point is i think lyrics should be open to different interpretations (kindof like poems).  i like your interpretation/what you wanted my intention to be.  thanks so much for your support...i needed that!

p.s.  the parents being empty means (to me) that they feel like they have nothing to live for anymore now that their kids dont need them anymore.  the rusty minivan is simply a metaphor for the fact that the minivan used to be used for everything (soccer practice, piano lessons, etc.) and now it just sits in their drive way as a symbol of what used to be for the parents.

i am still trying to work out the music for the song b/c my original version doesnt fit right...any suggestions on what genre it should be?

Hey:

I  do feel you have something going here but it still needs revision.  The concept comes through loud and clear but still seems disjointed and jumps too fast from raising kids to being empty-nested as it were and neglectful of the past by reference to bikes under snow.  WHy the neglect and loss of meaning and reason?  How did they get to this point?  I believe it needs explaining and should not be taken for granted.  You need at least one, minimally, verse to sure this up and develop it better.

I wrote a song that reflects this sentiment too.

Here is the first verse and chorus:

Sitting in my little girls room
Thinking back on a lifetime since
emerging from her mothers womb.
Uncertain future I'm bound to wince

Where she is, well, its plain to see
Dolls and posters, her own TV.
A cluttered desk and a telephone;
the things that claim a life at home.

Chorus:
At home in her room.
Every weekday morning its off to school she zooms.
And when her day is done,
Its home to room she runs.
And flying through the air she settles on her bed,
comfy and fed
And on her desk the books she's read at home.

It is a basic country rhythm that is more than a little bright in G-Mj 4/4 time.

The next verse goes on to find her more mature and less receptive to daddy's intrusions.

By the third, she has move out and all that is really left is memories.

You need to develop along these lines to to give the listener a better insight into why they are so pitiful in their way.

Good work.  hope to see more of it.
