YOUR IDEA OR CHANGE
Make a special IRS provision for vehicle expense deductions by letting rural carriers multiply route mileage by 3, or letting rural carriers use actual hours used on the route vs. personal hours (if possible) to figure percentage of business use vs. personal use.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE IT Currently we can use only mileage numbers to figure the business use deduction. Since rurals use their vehicles for many hours on the route, their hourly use is much greater than the mileage reflected on the odometer. By multiplying the route mileage by 3 you would get a more accurate figure for business use on the route and carriers would be able to deduct a greater percentage of business expenses. If you would simply drive your route checking mileage you would see that the time it takes to travel those miles is much less than driving those miles while delivering. We should not be penalized for having to deliver mail.
Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has..
