http://en.flossmanuals.net/OLPC_simple aka "Introducing the XO" is a
fine manual that describes the 7.1.0 software.  According to
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Manuals :
This is the manual for the 7.1.0 or "ship.2" release (builds
650-653) that most G1G1 2007 users received on their XO laptops.

Is there some way to put this information on each page, or at least at
the start of it?

That manual is deprecated so the best action would probably be to remove links to
http://en.flossmanuals.net/OLPC_simple or perhaps have it redirect. Or Adam Hyde, do you have a better idea?

I clicked [Edit this page] and I go to an oops URL that displays just
"Attention".  But maybe there's some other Flossmanuals interface to put
a header or footer on each page, or to change the title to "Simple
introduction to the XO for Release 7.1.0"

Yep, same for me - due to our attempt to "hide" the old manual content.

Also, the _VIEW ALL & PRINT_ link takes you to
http://en.flossmanuals.net/OLPC_simple/print , in which half the images
are broken links.

Thanks for any suggestions,

My preference would be to go through wiki.laptop.org and remove references to that manual, but I'm open to suggestions as well.

Taking the lastest, easiest way first,

In http://www.laptop.org/8.2.0/manual/Sugar_InstallingActivities.html
and in the Help version 10 activity (but not in
http://en.flossmanuals.net/publish/PDF/g1g1_2.pdf [**]) , step 7 is:
"In the Frame, click the Journal to launch the Journal Activity.
<http://www.laptop.org/8.2.0/manual/Sugar/Journal/resized_300x19_journal_launch.jpg>
"
BUG: this .jpg file exists, but it's zero-length so you only see its name.

Ah, okay, good catch. There's a new non-G1G1 titled PDF - Adam Hyde, can you replace that g1g1_2.pdf with the newer revision of the manual's pretty print PDF (or tell me how to do it?) :)

[**] I thought this PDF was the same as the online manual/Help activity,
but the text of this chapter is quite different in the PDF!  The HTML
page says "r1.12 - 17 Sep 2008", the PDF says Created 11/11/2008".  If
the PDF is a more recent version, will laptop.org/manual and the Help
activity be re-released?  If the PDF is a different document, can
someone please update http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Manuals with the truth
of the matter?

So, the truth, the whole truth is, that the laptop.org/manual and PDF and Help Activity should be synchronized. The PDF is likely the latest and greatest since I just did a rebuild (and bought a new proof and had to have my neighbor receive the shipment since I was travelling, etc etc etc.).

The single-source process is something like this: Someone makes an edit in the FM source. I judge whether the edit is worth re-publishing for, and which outputs need republishing to pick up the edits. I won't be republishing the PDF until we need a new edition of the book. I will republish for the Help Activity and laptop.org/manual though.

I asked earlier:
> --> Is the Help activity is the same as http://www.laptop.org/manual/ ?
I think it is.

Yes, as long as they have been updated at nearly the same time.

> --> is there a version number hidden in the manual?
The source of the HTML/Help has a useful DOCNUMBER meta tag.  The PDF
document properties has only a Created date.

This sounds accurate to me.

> --> what's the title of this manual?
Nobody answered.  In the wiki I'm calling it "the OLPC Manual / Help
activity for Release 8.2.0".  The PDF first page says "G1G1" in big letters.

The latest pretty-print PDF title now says OLPC LAPTOP USERS GUIDE. The PDF with G1G1 on it should be considered out-dated.

BUG: All the HTML pages are untitled because they have two <title> tags
and the first one is blank.

I'll log this as a bug in trac.flossmanuals.net to have dev investigate further. Thanks for pointing it out.

BUG: The PDF's Title in document properties is "Untitled"

I'll log this as a request for enhancement at trac.flossmanuals.net.

In the September thread "FLOSS Manuals visual presentation" I mentioned
a bunch of issues, they're all still present.  In
http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/8513 I provided CSS that addressed some of
them.  Is there anything else I should do to ensure they and this new
feedback is not forgotten?  I'll transfer it to Trac bugs or
Flossmanuals if it'll help.

Oh thanks for taking care of CSS work - hmm. Next action? I will use that CSS in the next "publish" to the Help Activity. Do you, Seth or Mel have any bandwidth to show me how to use git to "check in" the new HTML files (with your new CSS?) Or if I attach new HTML to that ticket (8513), could you re-package for the Help Activity.

Thanks so much for being another pair of eyes on all this repurposed content. I always appreciate good quality checks on doc especially when there are three outputs from the source.

Anne

This is all minor stuff compared with the great content.  E.g. this
"Installing Activities" is far better than anything on the wiki, a lot
of wiki pages should just refer and link to it.

The date of the PDF at that URL is still 2008-11-11, still has the
"G1G1" title.

But all three are unchanged and still not in sync.  I filed
http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9239, "update and release new Help (activity)"

By the way, where is the master on flossmanuals.net that produces these
three formats?  Is it some hidden "remix" of the XO and Sugar manuals?

I don't see Trac bugs for these.

Note that the CSS fix I came up with is a small piece of the issues.
The ALL CAPS TOC, the confusing white is/isn't a link, the wrong orange,
the lack of distinction between visited and unvisited, etc.  See
http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/library/2008-September/000755.html
But it's worth getting it out.

I have no file system or git access, just wiki admin privileges, and
none of this stuff is on the wiki.

Hi all -
Answers to the best of my knowledge are below - thanks for circling back on these!

Adam's got a big BookSprint going on now, but we'll sort that out soon. I'll also see if another admin at FM can help. I was embarrassed when I went to someone's house this week to help her with her XO and saw the big ol' G1G1 she had printed. :)

I don't think it's hidden from remix (or Objavi) but the book editing itself is admin-only access to prevent confusion when others edit. The source files are all the chapters in the Sugar and XO books. Every single chapter has INCLUDE code pointing to one of the chapters from either the XO or Sugar manual. It works quite well! But yeah we're trading off clarity and support ease with what might appear to be black magic. :)

Oh, shoot! I'm glad you pointed this out - I logged these two and one additional where the title page for the PDF is now saying Inkscape, ha ha. Logged with attachments showing what you found. Thanks!

Yeah we still have additional support we need for the Help Activity 1. CSS updates (though looking at the ticket it does seem to be mostly resolved within the parameters given) and 2. git/code access.

Thanks again for coming back again - it's very useful to have quality checks on our docs. I can tell you take pride in this - we don't always see this level of dedication in the corp. world. :)
