For some crazy reason directories starting with "." are invisible to  
normal Mac users. For a Mac, it would be better to have this in /
Library/Application Support/Grass.

"crazy"? - hidden files and directories starts in Unix-like
environments with '.' [1]. It's standard approach to store application
settings in the hidden files.

Wouldn't that be system-wide? It should be per-user.
