Hi Guys,

This is a message concerning the feature request reported here:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&aid=2576193&group_id=108454&atid=650542

Basically, attached to the feature request is a patch which makes scim use a newer, more
informative and automatically styled to the user's gtk icon theme icon.

At the moment, scim has the menu icon of a button with the word 'scim' across it, now for a new
user, this is very misleading, as very few people know what 'scim' actually stands for.

However with this patch, it will change the menu icon to a button with a foreign charcter on it,
illustrating exactly what scim does to the new user. It can be seen here http://is.gd/hpZy

Now the reason I have posted this message here is becuase although this is not replacing the actual
logo of scim (ie. in about dialog, window icons, it will be the scim icon), but only the menu
icon, ryo-dairiki told me to post a message here.

Would you guys be alright with this?

Basically I agree with your opinion.
But,

This icon won't been recognizable for Asian people like Japanese.
How about keybord icon?

BTW the icon for the scim-anthy also should be replaced with more
informative icon as Jens Petersen pointed out once. But I have no better
icon than current one, and no time to consider about it.

Hi Guys,

> How about keybord icon?

That would conflict with other entries in the menu that use the keyboard icon (ie. Keyboard
Preferences).

I see your point about the Asian people, however I believe that we will have to use only one icon,
and if this icon already exists, then why not use it. Either way it is better than the current
icon

There are reasons not to switch the icon.  If the new icon is bad
enough that we want to switch it again, it means that people who are
currently using the system will have to relearn the icon twice.  And
also, when you're looking for the icon, there is another variation
that you may fail to recognize.

A simple improvement could be to have two glyphs on the icon from
obviously different languages.  In that case, one should probably be
english (as pretty much everyone recognizes the english alphabet).

Personally, I feel none of these icons do a very good job of
representing what an input method does.  While the "scim" icon is bad,
it is at least accurate :)

I'm also wondering a bit whether it makes sense to change the icon
from representing "scim" to represent "an arbitrary input method
backend".  If you have two input method systems in your menu, should
they really be using the same icon?
