Question about versions for Exchange Simulator

Hey everybody,

We've received some requests about running our Exchange Simulator with
version 4.4 in addition to 4.2.

Just wanted to gauge interest in having the simulator run on a
different version of FIX.
It's fairly easy to do - our sim supports FIX4.0-4.4, we just chose to
run it on 4.2 since we believe it's the most widespread version.

So let me know what your thoughts are. Also, I'd like to know if
people are using the Marketcetera Platform (with Photon to see the
market data quotes) or something else to the simulators.
That would really help us see what parts of the project people find
the most useful.

Feel free to reply to me individually or the list as a whole.

We should easily be able to setup our Exchange sim to run both 4.2 and
4.4 at the same time. We just haven't had the time or resources to do
that, but we'll give it a try in the next couple weeks and let you
guys know once we verify that it works.

The market data will still be done using 4.4 - we are using too many
4.4-specific message types, and it probably wouldn't make sense to
back-port it to lower FIX versions.

probably not any time soon. we don't have enough bandwidth to support
that code as well, plus the code is not up to the overall standard to
be released as open-source yet. we'll need to do some cleanup before
we can feel it's good enough to be released.

Hello,

After reading everybody's feedback, it sounds like there's a lot of
interest to have the exchange simulator accept both FIX4.2 and FIX4.4
connections at the same time.

I looked into it, and unfortunately, at the current time we can't
easily do that. As you know, we use Quickfix/J behind the scenes, and
we've been using the latest (unreleased) code which allows for dynamic
creation of sessions (so that we don't have to pre-create sessionIDs
for everybody trying to connect to the simulator).

Unfortunately, QFJ is currently missing the functionality to allow
dynamic sessions of different FIX versions at the same time. I filed
the appropriate feature request, and will work on getting that into
the QFJ code base: http://www.quickfixj.org/jira/browse/QFJ-221

I've also found another bug
(http://www.quickfixj.org/jira/browse/QFJ-220) that causes the
simulator to hang occasionally while closing connections.  I'll be
working on fixing that as well.

So that means that we are not ready yet to switch the simulator to
have both 4.2 and 4.4 connections simultaneously.

Thanks a lot for your feedback, and I'll let you know when we have it
fixed. Meanwhile, if you notice that the simulator is down, just send
an email to the list and we'll restart it.
